I'm not a huge fan of books that might veer towards Espionage/Sci-fi/Fantasy styles, yet there are some authors who make this believable enough that one begins to forget the Sci-fi/Fantasy part by becoming involved in the realism of the story. Maurice Barkley did it very well because he made his people believable, ordinary and interesting. This isn't James Bond or Indiana Jones, it is the story of a military retiree who finds the skills he honed through his long career in Special Operations and Military Intelligence may still prove useful. After a demanding career, the discovery provides Mr Cagney (yes, James, as another little amusing quirk for some older readers) with new opportunities to assist the country. It also gives him a shot of youthfulness to be working and guiding younger agents.
Without spoilers, the best thing about the story besides its plot, is that it moves quickly, with enough twists to keep it fascinating. Its not particularly sneaky, most of the twists could be predictable, but that is part of its enjoyment. Barkley didn't have the characters make superhuman guesses and actions, just to draw logical conclusions. That's was the appeal for me, because it feels far more plausible than those that almost require magical intervention to be achieved. And the author didn't feel the need to engage in violent mayhem and overt sexuality to appeal to the reader. Maybe some will find that disappointing but it really made it a great read for me. I guess because I felt the people were more like me and less like some caricature from television. I guess it means I felt like I could relate to main characters and that always draws me in. The other part that made if for me was the historic and sort of futuristic theme which he brought together. I love the military history of mankind since it has done far more to shape our country than any other feature; using that appeals to my sense of adventure. Mr Barkley used historic information from Nazi Germany to show the continuing influence that WWII exerts today.
I hope the future books build on the team spirit as the adventure continues. Its the sort of thing that really makes the story absorb the reader as it did me; almost makes them seem like friends you'll miss when the story ends. Great for those who want an enjoyable, believable fantasy without having to suffer through gratuitous violence and casual sex.
