Choose the Superior Preference Shade That's Right for You
Choosing the right hair color can be a daunting task, but we've laid out the basics.
Hair Color by the Numbers:
Hair color ranges from black (level 1) to lightest blonde (level 10). The further you move away from your natural color, the more dramatic your results. That means your roots will be noticeable sooner. For more time between colorings, stay 2 levels lighter or darker than your natural color.
Hair Color by Tone:
Tone is measured in warm, cool and neutral. If you want to add warmth to your hair, go with golden, chestnut or bronze tones. Or, keep it cool with icy, ashy or smoky shades. Shades with “neutral” in their name allow your natural color to show through the result and provide the best gray coverage.
Why You'll Love It
- Fade defying color and shine.
- Luminous results.
- Lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Use an old towel to protect your clothing while coloring and to dry your hair immediately after coloring.
- To avoid staining your skin while coloring, apply a small amount of conditioner around your hairline.
- Always apply color to dry, detangled and unwashed hair. The natural oils in your scalp act as a protective layer when applying color.
- For hair with resistant gray, apply to gray area first.
- Rinse your hair with cool water after conditioning to maximize shine.
- To keep color at its best, don’t shampoo your hair for 24 hours after coloring.
- In between colorings, use L’Oreal EverPure Shampoo to keep color truer, longer and hair healthy.

My hair is a little past my bra strap, so I bought two boxes and there was just barely enough, which was a little surprising, because I typically have a lot left over when I use two boxes of dye - so keep that in mind depending on your hair length. I left the dye on 5 minutes longer than recommended due to how vivid the red still was at my roots. The biggest issue for me was how drippy the gel was. It went everywhere and it made the dye more difficult to apply, since I use a bowl and brush for application. At least the dye did not stain my skin as badly as other hair dyes tend to do. I generally lose a lot of hair when I dye, but not a lot came out this time, which was great - but whenever my hair is wet now, it feels like lead. The good thing is that my hair feels light and fluffy when dry, as well as very soft and very shiny!
My hair looks exactly like the color on the box, except for in certain areas where the previous red had REALLY clung. It actually makes my hair quite interesting in the light, as bits of cherry randomly pop through the silvery brown areas. In lower light, it's an incredibly rich, beautiful brown.Read more ›
