From the Manufacturer
When brightness, size, and cost matter, the Proton Pro is the best choice in single AA flashlights. The Proton Pro is designed to perform in extreme conditions, heavy rain, sub-zero temperatures, or anything else Mother Nature has to offer…This Powerful flashlight produces over 1,000 candle power from a single white LED. Proton Pro is made from aircraft quality aluminum with type III anodizing, o-ring seals, and a hardened glass lens. This ensures that the Proton Pro flashlight is ready for your next adventure. The Proton Pro is equipped with Freedom Circuitry. Which provides variable brightness, 3 signaling modes, and automatic SOS mode in both red and white beams. All of these features operate easily from a single button. Measuring only 4.25” in length and weighing only 1.6 ounces, Proton Pro is lightweight and easy to carry. With a lanyard swivel, pocket clip, and custom belt holster, the Proton Pro is an easy to add accessory. Proton Pro also comes standard with an Energizer Lithium AA battery, which is the only type of battery that works in extreme cold conditions. Proton Pro can also use any other type of AA battery, but works especially well with NiMH rechargeable batteries.

Why is the light so much better than the less expensive ones listed on Amazon & elsewhere?
(a) Small unit (easy to carry in many places or hold in mouth/teeth when both hands needed) yet impressively bright & long lasting.
(b) Single white LED emitting about 115 focused lumens, yet dimmable to user's choice at the moment.
All the others use multiple low output LEDs (poorly focused) in an effort to get some usable (though much lower & poorly focused) lumen output.
(c) A red LED (always far more efficient with battery usage) which is designed to turn on at very low output & ramp up in brightness.
This is extremely useful in the dark because red (lower frequency/energy) color does not wipe out eye night vision adaptation (reason red used in all military cockpit lighting for night flight) and the photon slowly ramps brightness up until switch released.
(d) Only a single AA cell is used, thus easy to change, easy to carry a spare.
If high quality rechargeable NiMH batteries are used (e.g. Panasonic BK-3HCCA8BA), the max lumen output will be a little lower (though not much because of this units Hi-Tech LED current control microprocessor), and the battery used can be recharged hundreds of time, greatly saving on battery costs.
(c) Multiple included accessories, which may be useful for some (though not for me).
I routinely carry this light, along with a spare charged Panasonic BK-3HCCA8BA battery in the only pants pocket in which I never carry anything else. Why nothing else? Because the control switch is on the surface, convenient yet a little too easily activated by whatever presses against it; thus nothing else (except the spare battery) in the same pocket. (This way the terminals of the spare battery will not be shorted or scared by metal items in the same pocket).
However, occasionally, I discover that the light has unintentionally been switched on when:
(a) someone tells me my back pocket is really bright or
(b) I notice that my buttock (deep to the light) has become quite warm.
(c) Since the white LED comes on at full brightness, using white for more light in the dark requires covering the LED lens BEFORE clicking the on switch, then pressing & holding the switch again to dim the output before uncovering the LED lens (all-in-all a small design compromise for single button yet sophisticated microprocessor control).
I contacted the manufacturer through ProtonLight.com (click on Customer Service\Warranty Service\"LRI\Photon Warranty"). I packed it in a used padded mailer, spent $2 on postage w/tracking to Oregon, US of A, and got the light back within a week-- repaired or replaced. I can't tell if it's my old light or a refurbished one, but it WORKS GREAT.
I didn't have to send it overseas. I actually spoke to live people to get status on my return (who immediately remembered my last name, "I remember your return coming in, it should have gone out on Friday, let me confirm that...").
Strong praise from me for LRI/Photon standing behind their product! "Lifetime Warranty" often means "read the fine print that excludes most of your problems". In this case, "Lifetime Warranty" means LIFETIME WARRANTY. It's refreshing to see that there are still small companies like LRI/Photon that take pride in their products. The fact that it's a fantastic all-around champion of a flashlight coupled with the amazing customer service puts this light (and other LRI/Photon lights) at the top of my short-list now. Quality light, but equally important, quality customer service.
