I use an XBOX One X and I'm coming from using the Turtle Beach Stealth 500X (held together by popsicle sticks and electrical tape) for the past 4+ years, that were fully wireless to the controller, but have a USB dongle connected to the XBOX. That's what I'm using for my main comparisons on sound quality.
1. They feel like a decent headset but I was expecting the entire band to be metal. It seems there is a metal frame around the cans but once they hit that hinge where the headband extension happens I'm pretty sure it goes all plastic. They fit pretty well but seem kind of heavy. Bonus travel case is nice. Volume dials and buttons seem flimsy. I’m very careful and I don’t see this as an issue for me but I was expecting metal and a little less wobble/give on the mute buttons.
2. They were very easy to pair up. It took about 5-10 seconds.
3. I played 3 games for a total of roughly 3 hours, COD Black Ops 4 Battle Royal, PUBG, and Forza Horizon 4. I had audio drops in every game, roughly every 2-3 minutes. Sometimes more frequent, sometimes less, but on average every few minutes. Sometimes it's a half second, sometimes a second, sometimes a few seconds or more. That is a killer in battle royal. You just have to wait for the audio to pick back up. Shooters sounded great as did Forza but I wish I could tweak sound. I definitely would have liked separate sound profiles for shooters, racing games, etc...
4. These sound really good and are loud. At least they seem louder than the Stealth 500x's. I use both with Dolbey Atmos and feel like I can hear better, direction and overall, with the LS35x's. Might be placebo but I'll test further.
*Seem to be good quality but I worry about the hinges and headband over time.
*They sound great and are loud. (I've only tested using Dolbey Atmos) Good directional awareness. I feel like it's better than the Stealth 500x's.
*Easy to connect to console.
*100% wireless. When you turn off the console, they turn off, just like the controller.
*Too many disconnects (likely the deal breaker for me and many others if there isn't an immediate fix)
*No Bluetooth. Can't connect to phone that way to manage headset or play audio from mobile device. (It's 2018 and these were delayed so long, this is a big miss since most newer mobile devices are ditching the 3.5mm jack. Works wired doesn’t mean much if you don’t have a 3.5mm jack on your phone.
*No EQ - the preset is the preset. While it sounds good it doesn't work for all games. The turtle beaches had pre-loaded presets or you could connect to a PC and configure personal presets for different game genres. They would highlight different sounds depending on the genre.
TL;DR: Sound and build is good but there are too many audio drops. No EQ. Waited a long time for these, not sure I feel like waiting for a firmware update. The audio drops might be a deal breaker.
EDIT (10/18/18) Don't buy these. I used these for 2 more hours after trying all the troubleshooting tips provided by LucidSound. I unpaired/re-paired, walked out of room with just headset, just controller, then both, to allow to re-pair with the XBOX. Nothing works and these are disconnecting a few times a minute now. Maybe a firmware update can fix them but with the way the pre-order, delays, lack of information/communication by LucidSound, and then how the launch went, I don't have any faith that this company can provide a quick firmware update, and even if they could, that it would actually fix the issue. Even 1 audio cutout is unacceptable. These cut out constantly. It's like every time you move your head they disconnect. To anyone reviewing these that says that the cutouts aren't a big deal, they're not an avid gamer. Call-outs, sound cues, and directional awareness is everything in the games I play, PUBG, COD Blackout, and Destiny. Shame on LucidSound for shipping these out like this with no fix in sight. Their quality control must be non-existent. I couldn't be any more disappointed after waiting this long and having been shipped a flawed product. These are going back for something reliable.
Bearing in mind my other headset is the Arctis Pro Wireless, it is a hard act to follow.
Build quality & comfort
I don't need to labour the point when it comes to build, LucidSound's headsets are extremely well made across their range. The LS35X is more about refinement, even over their flagship headset LS40 (soon to be replaced by the LS41). The memory foam padding is very comfortable, the hinges are more solid and the move to oval earcups beneficial. The headset is deceiving, in that they aren't especially light in the hand, but during a 4 hour gaming session I literally forgot I was wearing them. No issues with comfort whatsoever, though the suspension headband design SteelSeries employ still has the edge.
The most important aspect. I will use the Arctis Pro Wireless as a reference again because that headset has superb clarity. The LS35X is extremely close in that aspect, with well defined lows, mids and highs, which offers similar clarity. Where it arguably beats the Arctis is overall balance, because there's no obvious weakness. The LS35X are not bass heavy, as say the Astro A50, but they do produce sufficient punch and don't distort under the strain - assisted by those 50mm drivers.
Overall an extremely balanced sound, with superb clarity, impactful bass and well-defined positional awareness. I used both Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos. To be honest it is difficult to distinguish between the two; both offer exceptional surround sound, with neglible differences. If anything Windows Sonic offers a wider soundstage, but both technologies provide great precision - ideal for providing ample warning during Blackout!
I have noted a few customers complaining about drop outs. I am using this headset in the UK (imported from Amazon US) and in 8 hours total play I've not experienced a single drop out, or malfunction of any kind. I had the headset up and working in seconds and has worked flawlessly since.
However, days later... I am updating this review because I'm experiencing some interference issues. No audio dropouts as yet, but a crackling sound which when it starts doesn't stop, only to go away when I turn everything off and return to it much later. I'm still figuring out the problem, but it isn't a good sign, and a first for a wireless headset in my home. If it persists I will be returning the headset.
I have had no complaints from friends using the boom mic, which comes across as clear. Apparently I don't sound any different from when using the Arctis. I recommend placing the mic relatively close for mic monitoring feedback however, which is on the subtle side. The internal mic is merely a fall back option, so unless you want to sound like you are in a cave, the boom mic is always advisable for gaming.
The headline feature being wireless connectivity, the rest of the feature-set is somewhat sparse. There are no alternate EQ settings, which may disappoint some, but when the signature sound is so impressive, not having access to additional modes I'll likely never use is a minor loss. The biggest feature I feel it lacks is Bluetooth, which should be a feature of any modern gaming headset. The added versatility of Bluetooth would enhance this product.
A great sounding headset with some teething issues concerning reliability. On reflection I couldn't possibly recommend this headset based on other people's experiences, and the issue I am having with sound distortion, which is very disappointing considering the long wait. If I find a fix I will amend this review, otherwise I will be sending it back. A real shame, because there's a lot to like. Hopefully there is a firmware fix, which is inexcusable given the numerous delays.
1: feel very sturdy, pivot point is strong feeling
2: extremely comfortable, made for adult heads, they’re not overly tight or snug around the ears like other headsets.
3: THE SOUND WHOA! I connected them and enabled the Dolby atmos for headphones and holy....
4: the pairing and connectivity is awesome. I’m so glad it’s been incorporated into a headset. It’s as promised, hit the pair button on the Xbox and on the headset and boom, you’re rocking.
5: Mute fucntion is awesome, the mic has a red light that lets you know that it is muted. Simple press of the left ear toggles on/off.
I’ve had them for 30 mins so I will continue to update this. First impression though, I’m extremely satisfied.
Top international reviews
The headphones were used with care and had them for approximately 2 weeks.
One other issue which seems to happen to alot of customers is the dropouts,
My Xbox is approximately 3 feet away from the headset on my desk, And would suffer from frequent drop outs of audio, Which even the update did not resolve, Occasionally the headset would just turn off also.
Later found that high wifi traffic areas cause this issue, Which interfere with the headset connection.
This is an issue with all wireless headsets which direct connect to xbox, So i feel its the wireless protocol used, and not necessarily the fault of the headset as it needs to use this to connect to the xbox,
Other than those annoying issues, When working, Sound and mic were very good
I don't think direct connect for xbox is quite there yet. I would personally go with a headphone with usb wireless connection if you want wire free headphones. Until xbox step up the game with other wireless support, this will be an issue across the board.
However, the design of the headband seems mechanically flawed. Our first LS35X's cracked as in the pics, then their replacement did exactly the same in the same place. First pair failed after about 2.5 months, second pair after only 5 weeks. I don't think they've been particularly badly treated.
Amazon were great as usual with returns and replacement, but after the second failure I've gone with Steelseries Arctis 9X, I'm yet to see (and hear) how they get on.
5 stars for comfort, ease of use and sound. 1 star for the repeated mechanical failure
Setup is straightforward - which includes the firmware update, though a PC/laptop will be required. Audio is fantastic, which is well-balanced, has deep bass and excellent clarity. In a different league to the Razer Thresher for instance, and have a cleaner sound signature than the Astro A50 Gen 3s. Only the Arctis Pro Wireless trump this headset (slightly) for clarity, but those have weak bass.
They are very loud too. As an Xbox owner I can't find fault with the streamlined, ease of use and flawless performance. If you expect a host of features then you may be disappointed. You could say it's bare bones in that department, reflected by what you get in the box: headset, soft case, USB charge cable (short), 3.5mm cable, detachable mic. There is only one signature sound and the buttons on the headset are minimilastic. But what a sound, why have options to pointless EQ settings like superhuman hearing or bass boost when the standard EQ is so impressive.
For Xbox owners, there's a lot to like, though it's not without a few niggles. It isn't perfect then, but then which gaming headset is? None are in my experience!
Other platform users may be better advised waiting for the LS41 since the seamless functionality with Xbox is one of its main features.
Anyway, back to the LS35X, I was amazed at both the build quality and the surround sound. I've tried them wired(with my laptop and my phone), wireless(Xbox and laptop), with Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos for Headphones. No matter how you use them they sound fantastic, would definitely recommend these to anyone that doesn't want to spend over £300 to get something like the Astro A50.
Sound is loud, crisp and clear and Dolby Atmos adds that’s extra element you want for gaming.
The microphone is clear and well balanced, wether you have the boom mic or the built in mic in the headset. The noise cancelling works so well the person I was racing with thought I’d cut out when I wasn’t speaking.
The controls are so easy to operate, with easy access dials on the cups, with an easy push of the right ear cup to mute the mic. You even get a handy light on the boom mic to say it’s muted. Balancing game sound with voice is easy and you can even balance your own voice monitor.
The wireless is faultless. I went off to make a cup of tea downstairs and could still hold a clear conversation with my friend online. No glitches or cutting out at all.
For the cost you’re definitely not going to get more for your money. I challenge you, try and find something more feature rich at the price point.
I don’t know why these aren’t advertised more because I happened to hear about them via word of mouth.
Seriously, if you have an Xbox, buy these. Takes seconds to pair and you’re away, enjoying amazing sound and conversation, with stunning surround sound.
The packaging is great with high quality materials and no superfluous extras. The headset comes with a lovely storage bag that is quite thick and has a very soft lining.
The first thing I did was update the firmware (you can Google search on how to do this) using a Windows PC (I'm not sure if you can use a Mac to update the firmware although the file I downloaded did have a Mac folder). The LucidSound website has an excellent support section with FAQs and videos that allow you to get the best out of this headset.
Pairing with my Xbox One X took less than a minute. The audio is fair I would say. It's definitely not HiFi quality audio but is pleasant and not fatiguing to listen to games and chat for hours on end. The mic is good and the volume and chat-mix controls are easy to use once you learn which earpiece does what. The audio through the earpieces can be muted as can the mic (there's an LED on the mic that lights up red when it has been muted. The volume levels can go quite loud and the mic is quite sensitive. The mic needs to be positioned carefully as it can pick up your breathing quite easily.
I knocked off one star in this review for the following: the headset is quite heavy (but still acceptable for long gaming sessions) and the earpieces get quite hot leaving my ears feeling hot and sweaty after several hours. However, it's the best headset for Xbox One that I've used so far. Build quality is average so this headset will need to be treated carefully to avoid it breaking.
So only used these a couple of times myself - they were bought as a gift for my 15yr old son.
First things first - syncing with the Xbox was a breeze - just like hooking up a controller. We bought the Xbox Wireless Adaptor for Windows 10 (used some of my MS reward points so got it for free) - this made set up for Windows 10 also very, very easy.
My son is an avid gamer on both PC and Xbox - he's tried these with Dolby Atmos for headset and DTS - the results for both got a very, very positive "thumbs up". From a comfort perspective he's giving these 10/10, its the holidays so he's been wearing these for at least 6hrs a day since Christmas, so I'll take his word for it.
The headset does not come with a stand which is a shame - we bought one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07X9S5C3C/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_dsBdEbB0CBH9E which is perfect match and only £9.99.
I spoke to lucidsound via email with the photos. They are now sending a replacement as this should not of happened. LUCIDSOUND GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Surround Sound: pretty much non-existent compared to competitors (even the turtle beach 600's provide more accurate surround). In-game noise is purely that... NOISE! It's not distinguishable.
Comfort: the ear-cups are excellent and superior to all headphones I've tried however, after time they get a little heavy and incur neck pain after almost every use. The headband provides perfect comfort however, its not tight enough and as a result, find myself adjusting the fit - more so as I sometimes wear glasses when gaming.
Sound quality: Unimpressed with the quality and SL don't provide an EQ to balance settings in-game. Undesirable bass tones with over powered high-mid range frequencies that don't allow adequate bass to channel through.
Background noise is also irritatingly loud and seems to echo through the large cups! This is a real bug-bearer of mine as most head phones within this price range cancel background noise.
In hindsight, I should have went for the A40's but got sucked in with the online reviews!
I've edited the 2nd part of my review as after installing the firmware update it fixed the constant drop in connection due to being near a wifi modem. The problem with the firmware is that the instructions given by Lucid Sound to connect the headset to a PC are very vague and there are many people that struggle to connect; I even sent mine back for a replacement as I thought my headset was faulty. Once past that though they work brilliantly and even have a built in mic on top of one to plug in for even clearly quality (so I've been told by friends I've played with too).
Update 2: Amazon had to replace the headset as LucidSound were slow to respond. I've been paranoid about this new set, checking them after every use for signs of cracking, only storing them on my headset stand etc.. unfortunately, I noticed hairline cracks today, after less than 3 months use.
The high failure rate of this stupid plastic joint means that its impossible to recommend what is otherwise a great headset.
