Luka is a dancer. His latest tour has run it’s course and they are on break for the summer. He decides to spend his break in London at a show-mate’s flat.
He falls in love with two people. He fights with his emotions. He fights with life. But he comes out on top and shows his true self exactly what he’s capable of.
I loved this novel for it’s simple look into life and how one decision can affect so many other people and decisions in the future. The characters in this book stole my heart - especially Luka. I wanted him to be happy. I wanted him to find the joy in life. I really felt everything he was feeling.
This book too my heart and ripped it up a time or two. BUT in the end it helped mend it as well. Ms Harvey-Berrick is a talented author and I can’t wait to dive into more of her works!
*** 6 Star Review ***
Jane Harvey-Berrick has taken her writing to a whole new level. Luka, the latest release in the Rhythm Series, is beyond exceptional. This is a story that can stand on it's own merit and can be read without reading the first book in the series ( although I would highly recommend reading Slave To Rhythm).
The dance troupe has finished it's last show and is on break for the next few months. Rather than returning to the States with the other members of the troupe, Luka chooses to stay behind in London. He has been in London several times but never had a chance to experience the city because of his work. One of his troupe mates has offered to let him use her apartment while she is away in Austrailia. Luka seizes the opportunity with high hopes of a delightful holiday. He never imagined that his life would be ripped apart and forever changed.
Luka is a complex man. For starters, he's bisexual. Although his preferences tend to lead towards men, he also is very attracted to women. Being bi-sexual, you would think that Luka has very loose morals, which isn't the case at all. He's a man that enjoys one night tryst but he is also a man that values relationships. He has a certain set of standards that he lives by. He never sleeps with co workers or other dancers. He doesn't want the complications that may occur afterwards.
The last night of their show, Slave, he makes a life changing mistake. He has a drunken night with one of the other dancers in the troupe. He loves Sarah dearly as a friend but doesn't want anything more. Sarah wants more but is willing to accept Luka's friendship. She leaves the following day for Australia to reconnect with an old boyfriend.
Luka is enjoying his holiday in London. He has met a man that he is falling in love with. Seth is the first person to capture his entire heart. Luka's ready to make a commitment to Seth. Their relationship seems to be moving along brilliantly until Luka is introduced to Seth's friends. Seth doesn't want his gay friends to know Luka is bisexual. Luka doesn't like deceiving Seth's friends. As their relationship begins to develop some bumps, the biggest hurdle is yet to come. Sarah is back in London. Sarah is determined to win Luka's heart. She has something that can hold Luka by her side. The worst part is that she is Seth's twin sister. Luka is going to be torn to shreds.
Sarah and Seth will destroy everything good in Luka's life. They will destroy the man he is and make him question everything in his life. They will shred every piece of his heart and destroy everything he holds dear. The power they wield over his life is abusive, horrendous, and spiteful. After they have completely destroyed him, his friends from the dance troupe in the U.S. will show him the true meaning of love with friendship, support, and family ties. They will help him find his way back to the caring man he once was.
I have to say I usually hate books that have love triangles. This book was quite different. There were no winners where the heart was concerned. Two people destroyed the one person they loved the most. That one person, Luka, proved what defines a good, righteous person. He was a man of honor. My heart broke for this man. I just wanted to hug him tightly and let him know it was going to be okay.
Jane Harvey-Berrick poured her heart and soul into this book. I cannot express the emotional journey this book took me on. The writing was flawless.
I highly recommend The Rhythm Series. This series is unique and has taken on a life of itself. Each book is emotional, endearing, and riveting.
Luka, the man who just wants to dance. Who repeatedly favors only mild attachments to others yet in less than a few days time finds himself firmly and almost incredibly devoted to not one but two people. Never guessing that his laissez-faire attitude with respect to sexual encounters would lead to him to finding not only the love of his life but the very heart that he didn't even know he was missing.
This book had me all over the place and happily so. To watch a man like Luka, literally transform before not only my eyes but those around him was spectacular. He went from being a bit selfish to being incredibly selfless. Putting his responsibilities first and foremost was no easy task and yet I loved watching him figure out, through much trial and error, that he could have it all and still respect himself.
There is a ton of angst throughout and I found myself changing my tune about certain characters right along with Luka. I adored Seth but was wildly disappointed in him by the end. Sarah had her issues which I kind of understood but she too let me down. Thankfully the entire crew from Slave to the Rhythm book is on hand, and provide our guy with the true support he needs to get through this new stage of life.
I encourage you to let you mind go. Some may have an issue with Luka being bisexual but I loved that he stayed true to himself throughout. Love really is love and our guy showed the world that in the end his capability to care for those closest to his heart was both joyful and admirable.
It's a beautiful book well worth your time.
A solid 4 stars!
I have such high expectations, when I start reading books by Jane Harvey-Berrick, that I always wonder if the book can live up to them. But she has quickly become one of my favorite authors because every book is just SO good, and several are some of my all time favorites - including Luka.
