One potential drawback is that to use the Lume cube application you must register your e-mail address. For me this was no problem for but for some it is an issue. Also to pair these with the phone it is necessary to put in the serial number for the unit. This means that you would need to keep track of the serial number to retain the ability to pair it again with a different phone. Those this is resolved easily enough by just emailing the numbers to yourself so that they can be found later. I've looked to see i there is anything that could be done were the serial number ever lost and as of yet I have not encountered anything. Note that if the camera app built into your phone has any special features you will not be able to access them when using this as a flash. You must either use the Lume cube camera app to take the picture or turn these on as continuous lights to use your own camera app.
The unit is operated by two buttons on the top. When using it as a continuous light a single press on the left button (orientated such that it is facing away from you ) will turn it on at its minimum brightness. Pressing the button again will take it to the next step of brightness with there being ten brightness settings. Pressing on the right button will turn it off. Long presses on these buttons server other functions when using it with the app (bluetooth pairing, sampling the brightness of the room with the built in light sensor).
The units charge over micro-USB. A Micro-USB cord is included. The charging port is covered to protect it from water and is exposed by using a coin to unscrew the USB cover on the back of the unit.
I'll never travel without this again.
Within 24 hours of receiving the device, one of the top buttons stopped working. Ok, it was the strobe button and I didn't plan on using it anyhow. Still, it was a bit disappointing.
My videos are all about 20-30 minutes in length. I set up my rig, turned on my new light and started recording. Regardless of what it says, these lights CANNOT stay on indefinitely. After 10-15 minutes, it simply goes off. I assume it gets too hot and has to shut down. I even put a fan on it to try and extend the life but no dice. 10-15 minutes is about all these lights can do.
The button problem tells me that there are some manufacturing or design problems. In 24 hours I MAY have clicked that button a half a dozen times before it stopped responding.
The bigger problem is that you cannot use these as video lights, even for hobbyist like myself. They just won't cut it.
Bottom line. Keep looking. These aren't the lights you are looking for.
. Even at the highest level, the continuous light is still too dim. Not surprising, these cubes are very very small
. After 15 minute of use, the light shut down. After the photoshoot was over, I open the compartment to access the mini-usb to charge-it, and that compartment was FILLED with water.
I guess the unit is killed. I will try and wait a couple of days before I recharge it. Mind you, we have been doing underwater photography for years, and this is the first electrical equipment that i owns that doesn't have an O-ring around a compartment. Very bad design
In conclusion: if you wish to use this device underwater, stay away. I cannot comment on the use on-land, I bought it for underwater use.
Only problems are weak battery and the fact it gets very hot on high brightness.
