Top Customer Reviews
Not being an electrician, I was overly cautious with detaching and re-attaching the wiring. This is why it took an hour instead of 15 minutes. I was concerned because my old switch was not well labeled, and even though the instructions said that the common wire would be the one attached to the different color screw on your old switch, I wanted to be sure. After a view quick web searches, with suggestions on how to identify the common wire if it is not labeled, I was able to complete the install.
The one concern about the in-wall dimmer was the amount of space it takes in your wall. I required more space with the Lutron Caseta than the prior Lutron dimmer I was replacing. This meant that I had to mush the wiring pretty tight against the box in order to fit the Lutron Caseta. It may be in your best interest to watch the installation videos before purchasing the Caseta, and actually unscrew your existing switch from the wall to determine how much space you have in the box. If it is already a tight fit, it is possible that the Caseta may not work for you. The pico remote on the other hand takes no space in the electrical box, and simply covers the hole. I had to use the pico remote because I had a 3-pole setup in my kitchen (in other words 2 switches controlling the same light). With the pico remote, you simply detach the old switch, combine the wires and stuff back in the wall, and attach the pico remote to the wall, very simple and quick.
Before discussing the use of the dimming switch and pico remote with home automation, I will say that they install attractively, and work well as stand alone switches. If you are not currently adding home automation, but considering it in the future, these work without being connected to any home automation hub. It is very simple to sync the pico remote to the Caseta dimming switch, and you can add multiple pico remotes to the same switch. This is nice if you want to have light control in a new location without wiring, or if you simply want to sit a remote on the coffee table. I would highly recommend that you follow the instructions on the Lutron website for calibrating the dimming on this switch. In the out-of-box setup, the Caseta did not fully dim my LED light-bulbs, however after a simple calibration, I was able to get the dimming set to the lowest setting available.
Now the complaints. The first is that the pico remote has one additional function that the actual switch does not. The pico remote allows a favorite setting for your lights. This is why you see a round button in the center of the remote. This is not available on the Caseta in-wall dimmer. The other complaint is that I wish you could configure the middle buttons to work differently. I would like to be able to set a pre-configured dimming setting for pressing the middle-up button and the middle-down button. For example, it would be nice to be able to press the on-button for full-brightness, the middle up button for 50% brightness and the middle down button for 25% brightness (or any other percentage desired). I would easily change this to a 5 star rating with this customization.
In terms of using these with a home automation hub, I am currently using the Lutron Caseta with a Wink hub. It is still a little too complicated to add these to the Wink, but this is not Lutron's fault. Wink requires that you reset both the Caseta and the pico remote if you have already synced them together, or used with any other hub. This process can be tricky (I guess this would be Lutron's fault). You have to tap the buttons on the Lutron and Pico in a quick succession to reset them, and I have to admit that it took me several tries before it worked. Once I was able to get the switch and pico remote reset, after 2 attempts I was able to get them connected to the Wink Hub. For some reason, even though Wink guides you to start the pairing of the pico remote after you successfully connect to the Lutron Switch, the Wink would not go into pairing mode for a second time. I had to actually stop the setup of the pico remote, and go back and start it again. It was successful in the second attempt.
Once the configuration with the Wink hub was out of the way, these have worked great with the Wink Smartphone App. I am able to adjust brightness, setup a schedule to automatically turn on the lights, and even control the lights remotely. There is a small lag (about a second), but nothing that is a deal breaker. Even the wife said how nice it was to be able to turn on the lights before going down stairs in the morning. The switches can also easily be used in shortcuts and robots.
Overall, for the price of the switch and remote, I would have been happy even if I could not connect them to my home automation system. They look nice, install easily, and work for anyone in the home. Being able to remotely control them with my phone is just icing on the cake. I plan on testing GE Z-wave switches and Leviton switches too, but I think that the Lutron on the most attractive of the ones currently available, and work exactly as advertised. Again, the only reason not to give these 5 stars, is that the Caseta itself lacks a favorite button, and you cannot setup one button shortcuts on the dimming controls.
The switches work fine as switches, if you only have one switch per light (multiple switches that control one light are called 3-way switches). The problem came when I went to add them to the bridge to control them from the application. While I didn't see it in any of the advertising, the bridge system only allows 50 devices and this total includes each pico remote. Some of the original switches in my home have 3 different switches to control the same light. With the caseta wireless system, in this case you wire in just one switch, and the put pico remotes in the spaces where the other two switches went (you have to purchase the wall plate separately). Sounds a bit odd, but the pico remotes look just like light switches when mounted (with one additional button) and it seems to work well (except when you use up your 50 spots, more about this below). In our case we installed the switches added them to the bridge, but when I went to add the pico remotes I get an error saying maximum number of devices has been used. As a result we have quite a few pico remote switches that we cannot connect. This is especially annoying where we swapped out the 3-way light switches for pico remotes and now we cannot connect them to the bridge or use them from the app.
Result: If you have less than 25 or so lights you want to control, I really do like this product. I say 25 because if you buy a switch that comes with a pico remote, that counts as 2 devices towards your 50 max. The app needs a bit of work as you can only see 4 lights at once on the home screen, but it has some nifty features. If you, want to retrofit the whole house (and will have more than 50 devices), do NOT buy this.
If Lutron is listening, please replace the small triangle buttons with an old fashioned up/down rocker switch that controls the dimmer feature. It would be a big hit.
