I have read 3 different series of Zombie Apocalypse stories (Deadlocked by A.R. Wise, LZR-1143 by Bryan James & Left with The Dead series by Stephen Knight). All 3 of these series are GREAT and each has it's own feeling to it. I'll start with the LZR series since this review is on the book.
LZR-1143 within is a good, quick read about the zombie breakout that takes place in the two main books. The books keep you on the edge of your seat and its hard to put them down because you want to alway keep reading to see what happens next. Although you don't need to read the other books before reading this one, I would anyway just because the main books (infection & Evolution) give you the whole story as opposed to LZR-1143 Within and LZR 1143 Perspectives that tell what other people went thru during the same outbreak our main characters in Infection and Evolution go thru.
If I had to rank the 3 series of books I spoke of earlier, I would rank them like this:
#1. Left with the Dead series by Stephen Knight
#2. Deadlocked series by A.R. Wise
#3. LZR series by Bryan James.

As I said before, ALL 3 are VERY good. I give Stephen Knight the slight edge just because his series ends. I like the feeling of knowing when I start a series, there is a definite end. Mr. Knight's books also have a STRONG military vs. zombies storyline so if you are more into military routes, I would pick that.
Deadlocked gets the #2 spot. The upside/downside (depending on what you like) about these books is that they start out with a realistic feel and as the books go on, there is more of a sci-fi feel that comes into play (think of the resident evil storyline). This series has not ended yet either but comes in at #2.
LZR-1143 comes in 3rd but a VERY CLOSE 3rd.

I've read all the other LZR-1143 books and stories by Bryan James and loved them all. Within isn't a sequel or a prequel both exactly what it says. Its within. Like Perspectives it happens during the zombie rising. Its a great story with some interesting characters. If you read the other LZR-1143 you needs to read this one too.

I think the author did a great job with the setting, and the novella started off great. It is clear the author has a good understanding of the "soul sucking" banking industry and the service level jobs it ceases. The problem is once the story starts the author writes with a distracting style that makes it hard to get engaged in what is going on. In addition he uses words that just dont fit the situation like "a quiet guffaw." A guffaw is a loud burst of laughter...I would say skip the five cent words and just write. What would be wrong with "a quiet laugh" there? That is just one example of many. In addition the sentence structure varies from excellent to poor making me wonder if two people wrote the story or if only parts were edited. Plus, why are so many of the glances withering? It really pulls you out of the story when phrases are used over and over again.

From a strictly personal standpoint I didnt find the 12 hour collapse of society interesting, credible or fitting for the story. How exactly did the people in this place contract the sickness if the first stories were just hitting the radio when they got to work?

Like the short story "Perspectives", this novella also takes place in the LZR-1143 universe. Instead of following the main characters' arcs in the central novels, this is a side trip to show another aspect of the zombie apocalypse. Good read, high quality writing, great humor - like the author's other works. Highly recommend this one.

Dialogue and interaction between characters is hard to write, and this author needs to work on it. I found the italicized portions, where the author is setting the scene, to be compelling, but much of the rest was awkward and clumsy. Too often the author was explaining how the characters felt instead of giving the reader credit for understanding the situation. Too much writing, in other words. A good editor could have vastly improved this book. It was a compelling premise, but poorly delivered.

This was a really unique story. Most of the time an author writes about the hero of the story, the one who saves the day. Not so- this is a tale of the anti-hero, the guy next door, the man who would rather go along to get along instead of taking risks.

And this is the apocalypse, after all... Hero or not, chances of survival are slim...

I have only recently found this author's works, and this is the second of the LZR-1143 series I have read. I am drawn in with the believable characters (even if they are not the type of person you want to model yourself after) and the well thought out worlds and story lines. I will be looking for more in this series as well as exploring other works by this author. Kudos to the author. Keep up the good work.

I LOVED this story! I loved the idea of taking a call center's overnight crew and isolating them from everything else in the world while the zombie apocalypse happened outside and they are given very little info about it.

These people working in this boring and drab building for eight hours a day doing mind numbingly repetitive tasks over and over, all that by itself is enough to drive anyone mad. But when you add zombies into the mix, that just makes it awesome!

The characters are relate-able and interesting, which is something that most zombie authors can't seem to pull off these days. So it's nice to see characters you can relate to for a change. Big props to the author for this!

The ending is very realistic. The two remaining cube rats are running for their lives and they find a skylight that they open up and they aren't strong enough to pull themselves up individually. So they are forced to go up one at a time. One stays behind to give the other a boost. Once the first cube rat is on top of the roof, he turns to help the other and it's too late, she's been caught and torn to shreds by the zombie horde. When he's on top of the roof he realizes he was too cowardly to actually try to help her and only wanted to save himself. It really makes the reader wonder what we would do if we were in a life and death situation like this. Most of us like to think that we would do the right thing and help out others, but deep inside some of us know that we would just try to save our own skins and leave others to their fate.

The story is great, the plot is perfect, the characters are interesting, believable and realistic. Anyone who likes zombie literature will enjoy this!
