I purchased this device prior to a trip to South America. I was concerned about leaving the house empty in the middle of winter and wanted to monitor the conditions. I put the sensor in the basement near the sump pump to monitor temp and moisture. Setup is easy as long as you follow the simple online instructions. It has worked flawlessly for 4 weeks now. I have the internet gateway connected to a router less than 30 feet from sensor and it has never lost communication. Good piece of mind.

Nice ideal but does not work

Easy to set up and it worked once. Sent 1 pack of data with a time stamp of 10:30 am. But since it was 4:40 pm oh well. Then at 6:30 pm that day I got a alert from lacross "device has not sent data for more than 10 min". Now I get them every other day. But the time on the server is now correct. The biggest reason I sent the unit back is tec support. Or better NO tec support. Call twice and received no return call. Tried the email support no differents. Yes I did see it could be 3 to 5 days for a response but that does not cut it in this day and age. If you buy one and get it to work great but if it does not good luck getting any help. Yes the batteries
tested 1.52 volt and I could ping the device on the network and got 4 good packs returned. Pass this one by, there are other products out there.

Update: It has been 9 days and still no word from tec support to my phone calls or email.

Update: It has been 18 days and not a word from LaCrosse. I copied them my review no response. Now I can not get then to stop sending messages to my phone every other day saying "it been 10 min since last data" Anybody know how to get rid of these people?

Last update: 19 Feb 14 - 23 days and got a canned response which should have happen with the first 48 hours. And if I have anymore questions contact them again.... and..... wait.....

I ordered the Alert to install in our basement after our sump pump failed. We had several inches of water in our basement and it was only found when we went down the stairs. I installed the sensor on the pebbles around the sump and it will alert us if the water goes too high in the sump before it floods the whole floor. It was a very easy installation and runs off your home wifi. Some comments were made about there being a subscription charge after the first year. It is a nominal charge and can be paid yearly; we are happy to pay for the security the alert gives us. There were some complaints of difficulty in instillation. I am a 68 year old female and had no problem installing the device. You simply follow the printed directions along with those on their web site. After I finished, I put the sensor in water and tested the reaction. My phone received the text and I was able to act accordingly. For us this was an inexpensive fix to a problem with the potential to be costly.

I bought this and separately a extra sensor. The module with the flip up black paddle is the base station or gateway. It attaches to a Ethernet cable which is connected to you cable modem or switch. There is also a wall wart power supply which plugs into it. The stick displaying H2O is the actual sensor. The bracket clipped onto the back of it for wall mounting can also be clipped on the bottom as a table stand. Also shown is the water sensor which plugs into the sensor which says "H2O Sensor" on it, it has a 6' wire. I placed the H2O sensor on the basement floor. To activate DO NOT put the batteries in the sensor. You'll need 2 AAAs per sensor, they are not supplied. You go to Lacrossealerts.com and set up an account. Once the site opens you click Activate and complete the form. Once completed it provides step by step instructions to activate the Gateway and then each of the sensors including when to put in the batteries. In 15 minutes I had the first sensor displaying on my cell phone. The 2nd sensor took 5 minutes but it wasn't displaying data (I didn't wait 5 minutes until the next data up-date - my bad) so I deleted it and then had trouble resetting it. I wasted another 30 minutes getting it to connect. I suggest using a tablet or desk top to set up the Gateway and sensors. It will go much faster than using a cell phone. Range is great. I have one sensor in the basement and the gateway on the 2nd floor and still have 5 bars on the sensor. Once completed it works great. Anywhere you have internet access you can log in and see the temperatures, humidity, and if your house is under water. Some complain about the lack of an App but I like it. I can log with my Blackberry, iPAD, my work computer, etc and see the data. I gave it 4 Stars for the following reasons: 1.) setting the alert levels is very easy once you learn how but it is not in the on-line setup, or supplied instructions. 2.) you can only have alerts texted to one phone number and/or one e-mail address. 3.) resetting the sensor by holding the button for ~12 sec did not always work. All of these are nits but I feel they are worth a Star. I tried to answer the questions I had before I ordered it. I hope this helps.

I got 3/4 through the set up with no problems. Then when I tried to get the senor set up, I could not get it to work. The written instructions that come with the package are useless, but with some digging I found a very good video on line. They said to do a factory reset if the senor was not being recognized, so I did that several times, with no success. The sensor, worked initially, but then would stop recording the temperature. So, I phone customer support and was on hold for about ten minutes. Then they gave me the options of leaving my phone number for a call back, which I did. 24 hours later, I still had not received a returned call, so I repackaged the product and returned it.

Good technology and works well when it works. It was purchased to replace a wet probe version that only lasted six months. The obvious checks were done like the battery power but getting it going after failure is just too difficult. The help desk just doesn't seem to have the will to create good single point reference documentation and the web is so slow and not very helpful. This is the fourth piece of technology I have bought in the last year from La Crosse and the issues are consistent.
