I've had this drive for about 7 months and it works well. It's quiet and relatively cool; there is a bright blue light on all the time, though the drive still looks very stylish and unobtrusive. I only use it as a network drive around the house - not to access anything away from home. I stream movies to my computer and TV and back up my computer to the drive. Since I'm not doing anything fancy with it, installation really was plug and play. There is a web interface that's easy to use that let's you do various things like download files directly to the drive (bypassing having to transfer from the computer), schedule on/off times, and even has a decent torrent client, if that's your bag. The drive is not super fast, though the movies stream just fine. On the other hand, it's also not very expensive -- it's a good value for the money.

I'd been looking at alot of "cloudboxes" and finally decided on LaCie. The main reason I chose LaCie was because it had a sleep mode which was very important to me. I figured if it was going to be on 24/7, I didn't want it overheating. You can even schedule the timing of the sleep mode (including deep sleep mode). I looked at the Seagate Central. Unfortunately, alot of buyers wrote about it overheating (apparently no sleep mode), so crossed the Seagate off my list. I've been using the LaCIE for a coupla months and haven't had any problems. Glad I chose LaCie. One word of note: I considered the larger LaCie Cloudboxes, but had heard some buyers experienced problems, so I didn't want to take a chance and stuck with the 1TB. Kinda wish I had gone with a larger one, but I guess I'm fine with the 1TB for now.

I know its not the fastest device on market but for what it does it's very well priced! We use it to share family pictures with other family members around the country and we backup our devices to it. The upload transfer times are not REALLY fast but fast enough. For example, copying a movie to the device from a laptop via wireless connection takes about 30mins. But when streaming from it, it works great! Great media server and Apple iTunes media server! One thing I did to keep it from locking up after continue use was to enable the deep sleep option during early morning hours. Haven't rebooted it in months now!

I bought this device about four days ago and am only marginally impressed with it.

Yes, it is easy to 'connect' and have it be seen by the computer (I'm using Apple). However, beyond connecting it and seeing it on your computer, there's a whole other world of annoyance and confusion that awaits.
As easy as Lacie would like you to think it is to use this device, I beg to differ. I've had no less than three service tickets and six phone calls to Lacie to figure things out with this drive and its associated software.
The phone calls exceed the service tickets because their tech support dept takes a while to respond to anything other than phone calls.

Firstly, while it is easy to 'drag and drop' the iTunes Music folder to the cloudbox, the m4a (AAC) sound files in the iTunes music folder are NOT compatible with the streaming aspect of this NAS drive.
Any files that I want to stream to another device (iPad Mini) have to be converted to mp3 in order to be playable in a streaming format. If you're on your own wifi, the streaming is not bad, but if you're out somewhere,
the 'remote access' and streaming is another matter entirely. The files can take a minute or more to load before playing; and the impression I got from one of the Lacie Support techs is that it isn't really designed to be a streaming
player as much as a server where you can access and download the files you want.
In fact, if you're on your own network and you want to stream music to another device, you're better off just using the iTunes Home Share feature; it's a lot less hassle than even going through the cloudbox.

Pretty cool and simple setup for an intro NAS. Set it up as a media server for my friend in his new apartment since he isn't to tech savvy. He loves downloading movies so he enjoys being able to watch them over the internet whenever he wants. The software could use some improvement. It's not really user friendly, especially on the eyes. I've seen worse though. I would recommend it if your on a budget and don't need more than 1 TB.

The drive runs fine and works as it should. The sad addition is the software apps for mobile devices are severely lacking. The Internet portal is also slow and very buggy. File types are not supported between Mac and PC so when you want to stream music or movies to a computer away from home, error messages all day long. Oh well maybe Lacie will update these things soon.
