This is the fastest external drive I've ever owned. The slowness of my already-owned external drives was motivation for purchase. I've had many LaCie products in the past and they've all been good, so I went ahead and did it.

My computer is iMac; 21,5"; Late 2012; 3.1MHz Intel Core i7; 16gb ram; 512gb SSD.

With TB connection used, BlackMagic test for the LaCie shows R385/W336mbps. Actual measured copy/paste file transfer speed about 275mbps for 160gb mixed-data transfer. (text, photos, movies) That's about 3.6 seconds per gigabyte. Switching to USB3 connection showed identical performance.

This drive's measured actual transfer speed of about 275mbps is faster than the computer's own internal transfer speed of about 190mbps. I've never owned an external device that transferred data faster than the computer itself! I regard as astonishing.

Caution...I strongly suspect that if you don't have internal SSD or USB3 or Thunderbolt connection, there will not be any advantage for you. The drive itself, and the cables supplied with the device are up to the task but if your own computer's internals aren't, you're not going to get the speed you're hoping for. No consumer-level spinning drive will transfer data this fast. USB2 would make it utterly pointless.

This is expensive storage. I need the speed and my computer is capable, so I paid the price. If you don't need/want speed, and/or your existing computer isn't capable of it, there are MUCH less expensive alternatives.

I have one of those, too: 5/2014 LaCie d2 Thunderbolt/USB3 7200rpm 4T plug-in external drive. This is top-line for external spin-drive. I regard it as "fast" and am completely satisfied with it.

I installed this Thunderbolt SSD drive on a mid-2011 iMac and found that it was twice as fast as the original internal SSD as tested by the BlackMagic app. It tested the write speed at 348 MB/sec and read speed at 383 MB/sec.

Extremely disappointed with this drive. Unfortunately all of the comments about Lacie's quality and poor support seem to be true. I paid extra for this drive over its peers so that I could get the extra performance from the built in thunderbolt cable, but that fails. After serious assistance from the internet community AND NOT LACIE, I determined that the error I was getting, "wiping volume data to prevent accidental probing failed" was related to bad cabling. If you search for this on the internet you will find that the resolution (if it was not the correction of an accidental configuration mistake) was always a bad cable or SATA subsystem. I switched to the USB 3 port and everything worked like a charm.. As I use my MacBook Pro's thunderbolt ports successfully with other thunderbolt devices, the ports can be assumed to be fine. Switching to the provided USB 3 cable works, so it's not the drive or the internal SATA controller as it is connected to the USB3 port. This leaves an issue with the built in thunderbolt cable and or how it is connected to the SATA controller. Either way it's faulty. I bough this to use out of the country and I am forced to keep this drive as I fly out before it could be replaced. I am extremely upset that I did not get the extra performance out of this device that I paid for.

I have a late 2011 17" MacBook Pro. My internal drive is (was) a 3Gbps OWC SSD (for whatever reason, although 6Gbps *should* work in my Mac, it wouldn't -- I kept on getting hard crashes of the computer.

I bought this to clone my computer nightly using a program called Super Duper.

Yesterday, my internal SSD just died. It wasn't seen in Disk Utility. You couldn't boot from it. I even took it out and put it in a USB3-SATA enclosure and it didn't show up there.

While I'm waiting for the new one to arrive, though, this thing has worked flawlessly. I cannot discern any difference in performance between it and my internal SSD. Recovering from the crash was as simple as powering up with the option key pressed down, and selecting the Lacie as my boot drive. After that, 99.9% of everything was identical, since it was a cloned copy of the dead SSD (I had to re-authorize a few applications to open, and re-enter a few passwords -- that was it). I'm very pleased.

Yeah, this is a bit pricey but holy speed batman! The guts of this thing is a Samsung SSD...known for performance, stability and long life. Definitely worth it.

I need a backup drive for Time Machine on my MAC. I have been watching this drive for quite a while and waiting for the price to come down. One day my Passport Drive fell off my lap and that was the end of it. I bought a $53 Toshiba 500GB to replace it which just served as an interim drive because I immediately ordered the LaCie. I'm not going to try to drop it off my lap but I am confident that if it does get dropped it will still function unlike moving head drives. It's solid, it's fast, it's portable. My only minor worry is the permanently attached thunderbolt cable which if it goes bad I would have to disassemble the drive to replace it. Probably not going to happen anyway so kudos and 5 stars for this SSD.
