Moreover, the entire drive eventually failed, making various clicking noises and otherwise being very unreliable. It would periodically unmount from the computer, and not just because of the aforementioned lose cables, but rather the problem associated with the clicking noise.
So, for me the drive failed after owning it for a very very brief time and barely handling it.
The only thing that concerns me, is that I often leave this drive connected to my iMac - and then when I check it, it is HOT to the touch. Not hot enough to burn, but hot enough to worry about. Lately I try to remember to eject and disconnect it when I don't need to use it. I hope the heat buildup isn't going to contribute to its early demise. But the super-heating is the reason why I don't use it as the drive for my iMac's Time Machine backup, for which I'd need to leave it connected pretty much all the time. For the same reason, I make sure not to have the only copy of any critical data on this drive, for fear of losing it sooner rather than later.
It's lasted nearly two years and I hope it lasts longer. But I don't think I'll buy another of these drives. I have a WD portable drive with Firewire and USB ports which is connected all the time to my iMac as the Time Machine disk. It's not even noticeably warm to the touch. My next external Firewire-capable drive will probably be another WD.
So I bought a second one of these drives to use on my Dell XPS laptop. My intention was to use it as a firewire drive to get the benefit of the impressive speed since my laptop has a mini-firewire connection port. In this configuration though, I have yet to get it to work. In the firewire port alone, it does not get enough power from the laptop. There is a cable that they provide so that you can get power from the usb bus while still connecting firewire, but that doesn't seem to work either. So I'm stumped.
Conclusion: if you plan to use this on a desktop system, you're all set. If you are buying this for a laptop, you may want to re-think it.
