I bought this network drive to have a centralized storage for family photos, movies and music. I had no trouble installing and configuring the drive, as it went smoothly and without any hiccups. BTW, LaCie customer service is very good, if needed, as this is my third hard drive from them. This drive also comes with Genie Backup Manager Pro, which is a big plus. Some other network drives only offer a light version of backup programs, which is limited in what you can do. BTW, the backup program in Windows 7 doesn't allow backing up to a network drive, so you have to have a third party software. The fact that LaCie D2 came with one was a big factor in my decision making. The only issue that I've encountered after the installation is that I can't watch most of my home videos on my TV. I don't think the problem is with the network drive, but with my entertainment system. One of these days I have to troubleshoot them by upgrading the firmware in my TV, DVD player and so on. The pictures, however, stream beautifully, making the old photo albums obsolete. My Yosemite pictures look awesome on a 52" HD TV. Overall, I'm glad I opted for this one and would recommend it.

If you need a large capacity hard drive, then this is the one I would suggest. Price was right compared to others, delivery was quick and it worked right out of the box perfectly.

I give it one star for being the best looking external HD out there, LaCie really knows how to design the look of their electronics. And I give it one star for how it works on the day to day once you get through the horrible setup and just plain stupid network assistant program.

The last of the final three stars are for the set up. Though they do have a customer service program you can call or contact from their site the just plain oversight on how anything works together makes me wonder how this company is still in business. First setting it up, plugging it in and letting it be discoverable on your network would be an obvious way to go about this. However no, not at all. you have to download a very large Mac App called LaCIe network assistant that makes you register it. Ok no big deal registering the product is good, but it all goes down hill from there, I can't even explain the mess I went though because i still don't get it. Ultimatly I had to reset the drive to manufacturers settings because there is no forgot your pass word or username link on their sign in. Also the only reason you have to create a sign in is one to set it up through their web based dash board, and then you have to create a new sign in to get onto the dashboard. At no time do they tell you which one you will need to log in to set it up in the first place. It was the worst set up experience Ive ever had. Absolutely horribly thought out set up program. If any one at LaCie can read this please contact Apple Inc and ask them to train your programers how to create a user friendly....anything. But after that mess you don't even need to sign on or log in or anything ever. And it works ok for a network drive. So I give it a harsh shoulder shrug and a meh. Buy a Seagate or a WD, although not as pretty, much less frustrating.

This is my first NAS type drive, so I don't have anything to compare it against, but I believe, for the price, this is good drive. For any Windows or Mac user just looking for a common location to store files, it's more than adequate. However, for my purposes, I'm a little disappointed.

It looks good
The price is right.
Easy set up. You can skip the network assistant if you're a bit tech savvy.
Nice GUI web interface.

Write and read speeds seem really slow. I haven't done any tests and I have nothing to compare against. It just "feels" slow.
No NFSv4 only v3 (and probably v2)
SMBFS file naming standards are enforced. I can't even create a file ending with a dot. I believe the underlying filesystem is XFS, so this is surprising. I think they could have implemented more of the CIFS Unix Extensions into their SMB server to make it much more *nix friendly. ...or maybe I'm just not setting the right options when I connect.

In its weight class, it's a winner.
