I attempted to get the data recovered by a forensic recovery lab, and they couldn't get anything off of it, which means a full year of work lost. Unbelievable.
Any attempts to get support from LaCie and Seagate were ignored. The recovery lab even said that the product was obviously flawed straight out of production because it showed signs of internal damage, which could only be caused before the outer housing had been attached.
If your data is important to you and the thought of losing everything is a devastating thought. A) Use the cloud, and B) Don't buy this crap product.
I've used LaCie drives for over a decade and have had a very positive experience. That said, I would advise you to avoid this product (especially if you're using it with a 2016/2017 MacBook Pro or other USB C Mac). I used the drive to backup files via time machine. I had to repair and the drive before each backup. I erased the drive entirely dozens of times and started from scratch.
The enclosure (while aesthetically beautiful) has significant flaws; very sharp edges that can cut your fingers or scratch equipment. The enclosure also noticeably expanded and contracted when under load. Lastly.. To echo the other comments here.. the cable is garbage. It is often of lost connection due to the slightest movement. I also tried using hte USB C cable that came with my MacBook Pro and that stopped the connection issues BUT that particular cable is limited to a lowed rate of transfer speed (you get about USB 2.0 speeds with it).
Finally I plugged in the drive and *poof*.. it was dead. It worked fine the night before and hadn't moved from my desk. I submitted a warranty replacement with LaCie and was re-directed to Seagate who informed me that for $11.50 they would send a replacement and a return box to me. At the end of the process I was informed the drive was out of stock and there was no ETA on when it would be available for replacement... . I've resigned myself to eating the price I paid for it and buying a better product.
I did read others who were literally hurt by this device since it's so sharp. Initially, reading those reviews made me a little concerned, but now that I have it in my possession, I seriously don't understand how someone can handle this device so often that it would cause harm. I mean, plug it in, set it down, and let it run.
I love how it costs almost DOUBLE what a standard USB 3.1 connection drive in this same storage range costs and this was DOA.
Plugging it in both to a Windows machine or my OSX Macbook proved the drive to be defective. Not recognized by either OS. I even went into disk management in Windows in hopes that I could somehow get it recognized.
I also noticed I hard a pulse every other second as if the actuator arm in the unit or the spindle was attempting perform mechanical operation but was a constant failure.
Very disappointed, that is all I have to say. 120 bucks for a a supposed "premium product" and it was completely dead on arrival. I have order countless cheaper items that STILL work to this day. Shame on LaCie.
Also worth noting, this was shipped in a padded envelope. Hard drives should be shipped in boxes with more substantial padding.
