Versatility for Professional Environments
Featuring the next-generation USB 3.0 interface, the LaCie d2 delivers fast speeds on any late-model PC or Mac computer. And since USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0**, the most common interface on the planet, you can access your files from any computer.
** To achieve full interface bandwidth, connect the product to a USB 3.0 port on a computer or device.
LaCie d2 USB 3.0 Professional Desktop Storage
With the d2, LaCie again raised the bar on the industry's most trusted desktop storage product. Get the job done faster — on any computer — with USB 3.0 and a 7200 RPM hard disk. With an innovative aluminum unibody design, you'll notice incredibly low vibration and operating noise. Introducing the new standard for desktop storage.
No-Compromise Speed for Leaner Workflows
Professional components yield professional speeds. The new LaCie d2 combines a high-performance interface with a Seagate 5 TB 7200 RPM hard disk, resulting in stunning speeds of up to 200 MB/s. Excellent performance plus industry-best capacity make the LaCie d2 the perfect solution for storing large files and project archiving.
With this speed, it’s possible to store and browse a massive RAW Adobe Lightroom library with zero lag. And videographers can transport and then quickly transfer hours of RAW video footage onto a Raid backup device.
Innovative Design, Breakthrough Durability
Forged from a single piece of aluminum, the casing provides uncommon rigidity for long–term durability and premium quality.
Disk spins down automatically when the host operating system goes to sleep. Or, use LaCie Desktop Manager to configure the product to spin down disk after a specified amount of time.
The broad, seamless surface area of the unibody enclosure — which includes the integrated base — dissipates heat effectively. As a result, the cooling system prolongs the lifespan of internal components while enabling ultra–quiet operation.
Integrated Cable Management
Prevent accidentally disconnected interface or power cables without compromising the look and design of the product.
Packed with Value for Pros
With a bundled professional backup software suite and compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup, the LaCie d2 includes everything you need for secure backup. This product also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you prevent unauthorized access by password-protecting volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.
3-Year Limited Warranty
For the ultimate in peace of mind and value, the LaCie d2 features a three-year limited warranty. It includes comprehensive, complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support, and worldwide repair and/or replacement coverage. You can even upgrade this service with warranty extensions and fast product replacement.
With the new USB 3.0 5Gb/s interface and capacity up to 5TB, the LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0 is the ideal tool for creative professionals who need both fast speeds and large storage capacity. It features 7200rpm drives with a minimum of 32MB cache for the best performance and seek times, so it can handle the most resource-intensive applications. Best of all, it can achieve speeds up to 130MB/s in USB 3.0.

I bought this drive (6 TB TB3 model) to start replacing my LaCie drives from 2009. The old LaCie drives (2big USB 2 and d2 USB 3) were still going strong but I figured they're over 8 years old and they've served their purpose.
With my good experience with LaCie I decided to go with them again.
LaCie quotes the speed to reach 220 MB/s using the included Thunderbolt 3 cable and Thunderbolt 3 port on my drive/iMac. Using Blackmagic test, I got 210 MB/s peak. Speeds were under what LaCie claims but not enough to make me regret the purchase. (I believe Seagate's website claims the drive in my d2 can only do 210 MB/s so I'm not sure why LaCie added an additional 10 MB/S to their claim.)
The drive enclosure seems to wick heat away from the drive nicely. I'm using the drive as an encrypted Time Machine backup. The encryption process for a drive this size took ~5 days. During this time, the drive was at 100% usage yet the enclosure only was warm (not hot) and the fan remained silent.
The bottom of the drive has a great rubber strip to absorb vibration and noise. It works great!
Unfortunately, the Thunderbolt 3 cable can only reach lengths of 1.5 feet at 40 GB/s. You'll have to keep the drive close to the computer. (There are TB3 cables longer than 1.5 feet that claim they can handle 40GB/s but this seems to go outside the official standard. This isn't an issue caused by LaCie but a limitation of any TB3 product that isn't commonly shared.
I also like the 5 year warranty and enterprise grade drives in use.
Overall, this is a great drive after 1 month of usage.
The drive has been in daily use for over three months and has functioned without any problems. I use it to backup my computer including network connected storage. I do a lot of video and photographic editing which consume large amounts of disk space. Because of the 6 TB capacity, I am able to keep multiple backup sets. The speed of the drive reduces the time needed to do frequent backups.
The disk comes with LaCie Desktop Manager software which I find to to be mostly useless. However, I did not reduce the star rating because I bought this for the drive, not the software. Buyers who care about the software should be aware that some USB 3 interface cards will prevent the software from being able to detect the drive.
- The LED is brighter than the old models. It draws the attention. Good and bad.
- One of them failed at the start up. The LED blinked with the red light. I had to restart the system and it came back with blue. It has happened twice since I have bought them 3 weeks ago.
But their performance and design have met my expectations in overall.
After I realized what I had did (and getting only 2TB of the drive), I tried to go to the manufacturer's website to try and download the software that had come on the drive in order to initialize correctly. However, I couldn't find the software anywhere. I had to turn to an open source program called "EaseUS partition Master" in order to get the drive formatted to the full 4TB.
I can't speak about the "sanctioned" method of formatting the drive with the included drivers (since I zapped those), but be aware if you do initialize to a single GPT partition of 4TB, older OSs won't be able to see it, including Windows XP (with the exception of the 64-bit version).
Other than that one issue (which was of my own making), everything is going well. I've been able to consolidate files I had scattered about, due to storage limitations. Even so, I'm filling up the 4 TB fast! :O This is especially amazing when I consider how much less of storage I lived with in the past.
The write-speed is about 50% faster compared to old drive, and the music files sound noticeably better with this drive (probably due to the higher read-write speeds). I would buy this model again if I had to.
