- Great capacity to price ratio
- As a backup drive, it is really fast for a spinning disk
- It really will survive a waist high drop
- Really slow in Lightroom - even with USB-C

What the hell product did you come up with, dear Seagate? Is it an apple, pear, orange or simply a flop? Why?
It is not enoigh the Google owns you guys, you just have to give in to your precious data storage too -- Seagate. Once exemplary, now the bottom of the hole.
Will NEVER BUY LaCie after Seagate flop miracle!!! Suggest DO NOT BUY to anyone who respects themselves as specialist in the field or simply advanced consumer.
APPARENTLY SEAGATE CAN BUY 6 GOOD REVIEWS, BUT CAN YOU TRUST THESE AT ALL?
NO RESPECT FOR SUCH COMPANY FROM ME!
Very disappointed customer!!!
I own about 20 external drives, so I am quite familiar with what to expect. This drive is among the slowest I have encountered. I have a 6 year old USB 1 drive that speedier than this drive. Using a MacBook Pro 2018 with Thunderbolt 3 USB 3.1 connections, this drive transfers data at the rate of about 25 MB per second, not the 510 MB stated on the product. I am less than impressed at these speeds. For example, I am transferring 2 TB of data right now, and it will take about 24 hours to complete the process. If you do the math, it is about 25MB per second...a far cry from their advertised speeds. Even at 130MB per second, the minimum of what they state, this job would take 4 hours, not 24 hours.
The other annoying thing about this drive is that it states that it is USB 3.0 compatible but it is not Thunderbolt 3. They do provide all of the cabling you will need to connect to most any computer, but there is a pre-installed cable that wraps around the drive and tucks in at the end. If you own a computer that uses this connection, then you are good as gold. But if your computer doesn't have this connection, then you are stuck with the cable wrapped around the drive that you will never use. It's annoying and it is in the way and it cannot be removed. While I agree with the idea of what Lacie is trying to do, it only serves those people who own computers that use that specific cable connection. If you don't have a computer with that connector, then it's a useless appendage and an annoyance.
I would expect to see better performance and product from a company like Lacie. I own many of their older drives, so I thought to give them another shot, but sadly disappointed.
And lastly, I paid a premium of about 80% more for this drive over a similar drive, just so that I could take advantage of the USB Thunderbolt speeds, only to find the speed to be about 5% or at best 10% of the stated transfer speeds.
One final point of fact, I took a 335 GB group of files and simply duplicated them on the drive itself....meaning that the information was not transferred from one device to another device...they were just copied on the same drive itself. That task took more than 4 hours. If you do the math, you will find that the transfer (duplication) speed was 23.3 MB per second!

It gets points for being simple plug-and-play, but the aforementioned orange condom has the great little quality of preventing the USB cable from inserting fully, meaning that accidental unplugs can and will happen.
Thankfully I paid extra for LaCie's data recovery plan, but this unfortunately means I'll be getting my files back on a REFURBISHED LaCie drive, so arguably worse than what I started with. I've spent £120 on a hard drive brand that could pack in at any second.
Le my wasted money be a lesson for you. Don't fall for the "super rugged" gimmick. Spend a little more for Western Digital.
This 4tb drive died 6 months after it started "ticking", which spells the end of the drive. The return process is complicated by the fact that you need to supply a product code which is NOT printed on the drive itself. It is not unreasonable to provide this but not printing these clearly on the product is an error (numbers and code cannot be found under the orange rubber covering as well). Of course, as the drive is dead, Lacie's suggestion to use a software tool is rubbish - nothing shows up.
After many attempts I was able to get a product code by entering the serial number first. Why This is so complicated, I don't know but it's made to be complicated and difficult.
On the plus side, Lacie did ship a new drive in less than a week including delivery. Also, the drive is quite fast.
The cable is poorly fitting and of a special type.
Not sure if this happened because the USB plug came slightly unplugged and caused a fault of some kind. I have another LaCie Rugged Drive which was connected at the same time and that one, which I've had for more than 2.5 years, is working perfectly fine.
Apparently there's a similar issue with various Seagate drives (one used inside). for more info search youtube:
Are Seagate hard drives good quality?
However I wonder if over the years they would replace the poor quality Seagate drive inside with something adequate, or maybe Seagate improved their quality control, so this review could be out of date.
