LaCie Rugged Raid
Toughest in the Field. Fast and Secure Anywhere.
With the LaCie Rugged RAID, you get it all in one package – with zero tradeoffs. It delivers a game-changing blend of PC and Mac compatibility, capacity, speed, mobility, and reliability. As the ultimate solution for on-the-go professionals, the LaCie Rugged adapts to your needs for performance or complete data security.
More Speed, Less Waiting
When getting the win hinges on speed, you need Thunderbolt – the fastest interface on the market. The LaCie Rugged also includes two internal hard drives that are preconfigured in hardware RAID 0 for sustained performance of up to 240 MB/s*.
At this speed, you can store and transfer content twice as fast as before. It’s a time-slashing solution for field-based professionals who collect and move tons of data onto external storage.
* Actual data rates may vary depending on operating environment and other factors, such as chosen interface and disk capacity.
Versatility Anywhere, on Any Computer
Tailor the LaCie Rugged to your precise needs. Leave it in RAID 0 (striped mode) to maximize speed and capacity. Or choose RAID 1 (mirrored mode), where your data is duplicated across the two drives. So even if a drive fails in the field, your files remain completely accessible.
Using LaCie Setup Assistant, it’s incredibly easy to make the LaCie Rugged compatible with any Mac computer, PC, or both. And with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces and hardware RAID, any computer will recognize the LaCie Rugged**. It lets you transport a massive amount of data – with complete security – and access it freely from any computer.
** The file system format you choose for the LaCie Rugged must be compatible with the host computer.
Innovative Design for True Mobility
LaCie has designed acclaimed Rugged storage products for nearly a decade. With the Rugged RAID, LaCie makes your data more mobile than ever. Carry fewer hard drives, fewer cables, and encounter zero roadblocks.
The LaCie Rugged is tested to withstand drops (in non-operating mode) of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) and being run over by a 1-ton car***. So whether the LaCie Rugged falls out of your backpack or is crushed by stacks of suitcases in the airplane cargo hold, your data remains safe.
*** Determined by a test that approximates a real-world scenario in which the hard drive remained functional, despite aesthetic damage, after the product was driven over by an approximately 1-ton car (1000 kilograms/ 2205 pounds).
Integrated Thunderbolt Cable
Ensure you never lose your cable, stow it neatly when not in use, while saving space in your luggage.
Massive Capacity, Compact Footprint
4 TB in a portable size, the LaCie Rugged can store the equivalent of thirty 128 GB memory cards. Capacity finally meets mobility.
With its cap in place, the LaCie Rugged is IP 54-rated for superior resistance to dust and water splashing - even during operation. So even during a dust storm or tropical downpour, you stay confident that your data remains accessible.
No Power Cable Needed
Powered through the thunderbolt cable, the LaCie Rugged lets you access your data anywhere- no power outlet required.
The LaCie Rugged's RAID system is operating system independent, so any computer recognizes it (assuming the file system you've chosen is compatible with the OS).
The LaCie Rugged includes everything professionals need for secure backup in the field: A backup software suite and compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup. It also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect the entire drive or only certain volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.
3-Year Limited Warranty
For the ultimate in peace of mind and value, the LaCie Rugged features a three-year limited warranty that can also be extended and upgraded. The included limited warranty provides comprehensive, complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support, and worldwide repair and/or replacement coverage.

Previously I had brought a 5400RPM Thunderbolt Drive with me on shoots and transferring 100 or so gigs of footage would take about 45 minutes to an hour. Sitting around and waiting for the footage to dump at the end of a long day is the last thing you want to do so I looked for other alternatives.
I had a LaCie Rugged USB Thumbdrive that failed on me after about 2 months so I was hesitant to come back to the LaCie brand. But I said screw it, and went for it.
And so far so good. It's survived a couple shoots and a few plane trips. It feels solid, and it's USB powered so it's truly portable. I haven't dropped it yet so I can't testify to it's durability in that regard. It's cut down data transfer speeds to "is this real life?" levels. 100 gigs takes 5-10 minutes. It's truly a time saver. And time is money, And money is good to buy yourself a ticket to disneyland where you can buy mad amounts of corn dogs to eat.
- Great capacity to price ratio
- As a backup drive, it is really fast for a spinning disk
- It really will survive a waist high drop
- Really slow in Lightroom - even with USB-C

The drive is kind cool with it's orange jacket and built in Tbolt cable and I don't worry too much using it at home and in the office. Also it can be partitioned into two drives with one partition being Mac and the other being FAT32. Very easy to set up with software that comes on the drive.
I connected via Thunderbolt, went to the SETUP file and it gave me the choice of Window-Mac share or just Mac. It also gave me the choice of single or partition. I selected the partition and set up 2/3rds for Win-Mac Sharing (FAT32) and a third for Mac only. After formatting (easy, easy, only seconds) a screen popped up offering to backup to Time Machine. I said yes and it started backup to the Mac only partition. (I should have known that is what it would do!)
At that point I realized that between my 3 Mac computers, I may need more than 500GB for backups and I likely would not need the 1400GB for the Shared files (my husband is Windows and I am the one managing all our house records). Files don't take up as much space as backups. But I could not stop the back up and going back into the SETUP file only said "DONE"- it gave me no option to re-partition it differently.
So while I type this, I am letting it finish the back up to Time Machine and will then try using Disk Utility later today. I should be able to erase/restore and then repartition it with more space dedicated to my Mac computer back ups. I also use iDrive (online) so its not that big a deal- I am not too worried about losing files, just the speed/convenience of accessing them locally.
I plan to have the FAT32 partition available as a file share option over our LAN. I would leave it connected to my Mac Mini which would act as a server and the files that I work with on other computers would actually accessible from the LaCie while it is connected to the MM. Or I could disconnect and use it as a safeguard option by not keeping it online- I would just connect it periodically to sync files and have the MM be the accessible drive for the other home computers. Haven't quite decided yet. There is something reassuring to know that potential hackers could not hold our files hostage.
I probably should give this a 5 star as my other 2 LaCie Rugged Drives are still going strong- one at 12 years and one at 7 years. Its just that I turned the 750 GB one over to hubby for his Windows and the other older model has even less GB and I needed TB storage. Hoping this product lasts a long time like my others.
I did have another LaCie product, a real external dedicated hard drive but our frequent brownouts/blackouts knocked out the drive despite it being on a surge protector. LaCie wanted $1400 to recover the disk (I declined). They said it was likely due to the stress of the drive spinning on/off so much when the power was turning on/off repeatedly. Gee, was I glad I had multiple backups!
