Previously I had brought a 5400RPM Thunderbolt Drive with me on shoots and transferring 100 or so gigs of footage would take about 45 minutes to an hour. Sitting around and waiting for the footage to dump at the end of a long day is the last thing you want to do so I looked for other alternatives.
I had a LaCie Rugged USB Thumbdrive that failed on me after about 2 months so I was hesitant to come back to the LaCie brand. But I said screw it, and went for it.
And so far so good. It's survived a couple shoots and a few plane trips. It feels solid, and it's USB powered so it's truly portable. I haven't dropped it yet so I can't testify to it's durability in that regard. It's cut down data transfer speeds to "is this real life?" levels. 100 gigs takes 5-10 minutes. It's truly a time saver. And time is money, And money is good to buy yourself a ticket to disneyland where you can buy mad amounts of corn dogs to eat.
Worth its cost.
One point, though, be sure to write down the serial number thatʻs on the box... before throwing it away. You will not find it on the device when you register it, unless you open the casing, which would break your manufacturerʻs warranty.
About the only flaw is the rather odd LaCie software. It doesn't do much that you can't do with Apple's software alone, aside from have desktop icons that match the drive. The instructions on how to use the LaCie software would be better served with instructions on how to plug in the drive and use OS X's Disk Utility.
One little annoying problem that I've been having is that just moving the HD a little while it's connected will prompt my computer into thinking that I tried removing it. I get a warning saying that I disconnected it improperly and that the next time I reconnect it, it will try to recover what might have been damaged. I use my laptop on my lap, and the cord to this HD is pretty short, so it's hard to not let it move. If the cord was longer, I'd at least be able to set it on a table while in use.
I'm not pleased with the seller. When I received this, I wanted to register it, which required providing the Serial #. The SN is on the label on the package, but someone put a sticker over it, and it was impossible for me to remove the sticker without tearing the label underneath it. When I asked the seller for advice, they said that Amazon is the one who put the sticker over the label so contact them. When I tried to contact Amazon, it required the Sellers account info. I'm not a Seller, so again, I contacted the Seller, hoping they would be willing to either contact Amazon for me with this issue or provide me a direct email address or phone # to Amazon. Never heard from them again. I eventually got help from LaCie, but at least I now know what kind of Seller this is, and would not order from them again.
