For 4K and other bandwidth-hungry workflows, external storage needs to be fast, secure, reliable, and quiet. The new LaCie 5big fits the bill, delivering Thunderbolt 2 speeds for 4K video editing, up to 30TB capacity, and hardware RAID 5/6 for no-compromise data security. With Thunderbolt 2 technology, the interface is no longer the performance bottleneck. For the 5big, LaCie harnessed the breakthrough performance potential of the Thunderbolt 2 I/O, squeezing the absolute best speeds out of the hard disks. Add a hardware RAID controller and 7200RPM disks and the result is incredible, sustained speeds of up to 1050MB/s that turbocharge 4K workflows, file transfers, and backups.

I am writing to say that the unit has been flawless until just recently when I began having issues with the drive dropping out of OS X. After speaking with LaCie tech support I was informed that I would need to reconfigure my RAID0 array. That was not a problem as I have all data regularly backed up (as one should when running ANY Raid0 setup).
Apple has stopped supporting RAID in disk utility with the latest OS X update, so I downloaded a third party software RAID called SoftRaid. This software has built in disk monitoring functions and informed me that one of the five disks in the LaCie 5Big was showing bad sectors and was likely to fail soon.
I relayed this information to LaCie tech support and much to my surprise they told me that this drive would be replaced under warranty (it's been over 2 1/2 years since I bought this!). I was sure that they were going to tell me that they would not deal with the drive until it had totally failed, which I was afraid may be some time yet and then be out of warranty.
I am very impressed with the level of customer service that I have received from LaCie on this issue!
