RAID for Speed or Security

Use Disk Utility on your Mac OS to configure the 2big Thunderbolt Series into a RAID array that suits your needs. It's possible to set it up as a mirrored RAID set (RAID 1), which provides data protection if one disk fails. Thanks to its removable disks, you can simply replace a disk, with zero data loss and no work interruption.

Alternatively, configure it as a striped RAID set (RAID 0) to maximize speed and capacity for large file storage and fast transfers. It even supports JBOD, which lets you assign each disk to a specific data storage task. For instance, you can put backups for even weeks on one disk, and odd weeks on the other.

LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series
Daisy Chain to Multiply Options

Thunderbolt technology is the most flexible interface ever created. With dual Thunderbolt ports on the 2big, you can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt peripherals together. That means you don't need to buy a hub to connect multiple devices to a single Thunderbolt port on your computer. In addition, it increases the total amount of storage you can make available to your Mac.

Daisy chaining multiple 2bigs even pushes overall performance to more than 670MB/s** for your most data-intensive tasks. Thunderbolt technology is also mini-DisplayPort compatible. For example, you can connect a display and a 2big to your Mac via a single Thunderbolt cable.

LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series
Aluminum Reliability and Security

The 2big's advanced dual cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. Its solid-aluminum casing provides 60% more surface area, which diverts and dissipates heat more efficiently. In addition, its thermo-regulated fan turns on and off according to internal temperature. As a result, it cools the components while reducing electricity usage. For more energy savings, the front power button even lets you turn off the product without breaking a daisy chain connection.

LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series
Designed for Professionals

The 2big Thunderbolt Series was painstakingly designed to integrate seamlessly into professionals' workspace. The ultra-quiet cooling fan makes the 2big perfect for even the most noise-sensitive creative environments.

What's more, you can stand it alone vertically, or lay it horizontally on your desk to stack with multiple products. Even neatly stack it with the LaCie d2 Desk Rack or standard 19" Rackmount Kit.

I make YouTube videos. All my raw 1080P footage is stored on this 4TB drive. Speed is never an issue. I've been using my LaCie for a year now and am buying another one as a backup drive. Its pretty durable as I've dropped it once (my hardwood floor lost that battle), and I lug it to and from the Apple Store when I need to see the FCP X Guru. For Thunderbolt drive you're pretty much gonna spend $100/TB. That is pricey by USB standards, but I can't be waiting around for data to transfer while I'm editing a film. Thunderbolt is WORTH IT!! And my LaCie drive is a WINNER!

I own 4 of these and a 5Big Network NAS 10TB. In about 3 years I had one catastrophic loss on one of the 2Bigs (Pretty much my fault, using RAID 0 and hard drives do fail.) The 10Big keeps telling me that one of my hard drives is "missin." even thought the hard drive itself is fine (swapped in three diff drives.)

But the part that irked me the most is the response from their customer service. One of the lights on one of my 4 2Bigs's is practically off compared to the other three. It just looks dumb. So I asked them to send me a new light bulb and I would replace it. They said due to contracts they 'cant' and I'd have to send the whole thing in. PITA. So I spent $40 to send them the drive and moved all my data off and waited two weeks.

They replaced the two hard drives (that worked fine) and left the light the way it is. I told them and they said the light was "within expected tolerances." Clearly they didn't even read the problem I had an made a mistake, and refused to own up to it. They pretty much ended the discussion with "yeah we're not going to fix that defect for you, are we're done here?"

Thats how they treat a guy who spends $3,000 on their products.

First impression of this drive is that it has made my whole system more responsive over the firewire drives which I have now daisy-chained off of this drive as backup drives using a thunderbolt to firewire adapter cable. All is working extremely well. The difference is so much increased speed that it's like night and day, like having a flash drive compared to the slow response time of the firewire drives. If you need increased disk space and have outgrown your existing firewire drives this will give you a surprise in added performance.

I added this drive, and because it is actually two physical 2TB drives in one case, I used the Mac 'Disk Utility' to first 'delete' the combined drives which left the two existing drives naked and exposed as all that was left. I then renamed the two drives according to my wishes and now have one for working with, one spare empty for later use, possibly for video, and use my firewire drives as backup drives.

Been using this for years via thunderbolt on my iMac to store and work on photos. It's plenty fast, quiet enough, has never had an issue, and I'm just now starting to outgrow its 4TB. I've also used its second thunderbolt port to connect my TV as a second monitor for movie watching or group editing.

Excellent hard drive - silent, and fast. I did go ahead and cover the bright blue light on the front with a sticky note because it's pretty bright at night, but cool regardless. Thanks for offering such an amazing product! (oh, I use this on a mac and it works perfectly!)

At first, it would disconnect after about 5 minutes from my Mac Pro. But after a Mavericks update, it didn't do it anymore. So now it works great. If I sleep my mac, this will shut off after about 20 seconds.

I've had this for about a month now and I've already finished a big project on Final Cut Pro with all the media files on LaCie. Everything went smoothly and I had no complaints. Of course it's not as fast as my internal SSD on my Macbook Retina but it was way faster than any other external hard drives I've had. If fast performance is what you're after, make sure the LaCie drives are configured for RAID 0 (Read what RAID 0 is here: http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/08/raid-levels-tutorial/). However, this was what my LaCie was configured to by default when I got it so you probably won't have to do anything either. But to make sure, follow the instructions here: https://www.lacie.com/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10573&article=1018

It was nice to have this as the media storage when working with FCP since FCP likes to create very high quality render files that hog up a lot of space. I usually just deleted them every 15 mins or so before I owned the LaCie since they aren't essential for editing. However, I was able to just let them all gather up on the LaCie until I was done with my project and delete them after. Saved me a good chunk of time.
