The general concepts of radioactivity and half-life are simplified and explored with this kit. Using plastic simulats to simulate radioactive atoms, each student conducts a series of activities that provides reproducible, graphable data. Students then perform calculations measuring Carbon 14, a radioactive isotope used to date plant and animal remains, in samples of amber, 28,000 year old charcoal, and pollen. This activity can also be used to enhance student math skills. Kit includes teacher’s guide (1), student worksheets and guides with data charts (30), sets of simulats (simulated radioactive atoms) (15), shakers (15).

I eagerly opened the package and had my trusty Geiger counter handy so I could conduct a few calibrated experiments with alpha particles. I realized this a "Duh!" that there are no radioactive particles like the ones I used to teach with in the box. It's a paper exercise using cardboard shapes that are black on one side and white on the other. Shake them up and remove the ones of a certain color and you can simulate radioactive decay.
Oh dear, I guess my radon calibration experiments will have to wait.
I gave this 2 stars because i really feel the word "Simulated" should be placed in the title. I've waited for 5 days for paper markers, not alpha particles.
