How do the Brits keep doing it? Just when you think they can't possibly top their hilarious shows here comes another. I must admit I haven't heard the radio series, but I've seen enough of the tv series to say it is a non stop riot. Full of verbal goofs (an SUV is an SOB; Viagra is Niagra; and the likes) and just plain out loony Brits... You have to watch an episode twice to get it all in. Keep 'em coming because at the moment American television is the pits.

If you haven't caught this British TV comedy, here's 'the letters' in print and use your imagination. Two ladies meet at a wedding and begin a love/hate frienship by letter and in person. These ladies are not your Mrs. Bucket. They steal each others men, attend protest rallies in bikinis, even end up at different ends of the same prison. High literature it isn't; high jinks it is.

i wish this series was available on dvd for US, but alas...so i bought the audio cds to tide me over. saw series on PBS & loved it. in lieu of the dvds, these will do nicely. different cast, but just as brilliant.you'll recognize prunella scales' voice from fawlty towers, and patricia routledge from keeping up appearances, amongst other things.

I have listened to several of the audio recordings of `Ladies of Letters' but this is the first I've read. It's the idea book to dip into when you have a few spare moments. The letters are marvellous examples of how to compliment someone without actually complimenting them and how to criticise without appearing to. The letters do contain an ongoing story which you can follow from one letter to the next.

I found myself chuckling and cringing over some of the spats between Irene and Vera - chance met at Irene's daughter's wedding. In this book Vera and Irene find themselves in some very sticky situations from which only their good friends can extricate them. I think Ladies of Letters actually work better in audio format but I enjoyed reading these over the space of a few evenings.
