About the Author

John Blundell is the author of Margaret Thatcher: A Portrait of the Iron Lady (NYC: Algora, 2008) and Waging the War of Ideas (London: IEA, 3rd revised and expanded edition 2007). He wrote the current work while a Visiting Fellow of The Heritage Foundation, Washington, DC. He also serves as Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs, London, UK where he was Director General from 1993 through 2009.

He is a past President of the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University, Virginia and the Atlas Economic Research Foundation, Washington DC, and serves on both boards of directors. He is a past President of the Charles G Koch Foundation, Vice President of the Mont Pelerin Society and a former board member of the Philadelphia Society.

In 2010 he received an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Buckingham, UK and an honorary doctorate in social science from the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City, Guatemala, which also made him an Honorary Professor. He welcomes word of more ladies for liberty, dead or alive, American or non-American.

In Ladies For Liberty John Blundell presents a pleasantly readable review of our nation's political and social history, from the mid-1700's to the late 20th century. Into that framework he weaves the private lives and public accomplishments of 20 remarkable American women, champions of liberty all.

Some, e.g., Abigail Adams, are known to all: others, e.g., the Grimke sisters, are known only to real history buffs. But Blundell brings each to life with a rich narrative style in a book that should interest every student of American history.

A fascinating stroll through American History

While many of the subjects are well known (Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Ayn Rand) the chapters I found most interesting were the ones on American heroes who I knew little or nothing about. The story of Madam CJ Walker was my favorite. How a women born to former slave parents worked her way up eventually starting a fabulously successful beauty business to become the wealthiest women in history is an American success story that all of us should know about. Read this book and be inspired.

This book highlights the accomplishments of many women who made invaluable contributions to America. The subject matter was fascinating and worthy of being told. I found the author's choice of words and presentation style awkward and found I had to re-read sections to follow his thought process. It is as if it had been written without the beneft of another set of experienced eyes such as an independent editor.
