“You don’t date, remember? You’re a ladies’ man.”
This was one of my most highly anticipated books this year and I am always worried that when I have such high expectations I am going to be let down, but I should have known better…this is Katy Evans. Katy Evans has delivered time and time again for me, sometimes you gel with an author’s voice and that is definitely the case for me. Her characters never fail to wheedle their way into my heart and head and her words always pack one hell of an emotional punch. I live and breathe a Katy Evans story, it is never just a book, it is always a journey. Katy Evans has given us Remy, Greyson, Mackenna, Maverick and Saint and now she has delivered one huge contender in the book boyfriend battles in the shape of Tahoe. This man…this man…god, this man…I wanted to hug him and love him all at the same time. It is no secret that Remy is top of my list, Saint is up there too and now I have to add another, Tahoe, three BBF’s in my top four belong to Katy Evans. To say I adored this book is a huge understatement, for me, Tahoe’s story was perfect. Perfect for him, perfect for Gina, a perfect addition to this series and we catch up with Rachel and Saint, win win situation.
“…there always stood a six-foot-plus blond Tyrannosaurus Rex, and I hadn’t realized until now that nothing could have kept me from falling in love with him.”
We have read about Tahoe’s shenanigans throughout the Manwhore Series and he was always the larger than life character that was the life and soul of every party and was always naked without a woman or two on his arm. While he was the epitome of a joker and a player in his social life, Tahoe was self-made, he was a man who worked extremely hard and yet played harder. While he seemed to always be disconnected with the opposite sex I always wondered what had happened to him to make him that way. There is always a reason and his back story was one that I eagerly anticipated. Tahoe had a heart of gold, he was deep, was extremely protective of those closest to him and adored his family, he was loyal to a fault and after shedding that playboy persona the real Tahoe came out to play and he was just simply stunning.
“Why do you even need a mask when you wear a mask all the time?”
“Cause you can’t go showing people the worst parts of you. They don’t deserve it, and neither do you deserve to be judged for it.”
Gina was the total opposite to Tahoe, she has her insecurities and as her friends move on and get married or get into relationships she is feeling more and more alone, she feels that she is being left in their slip stream and worse than that, forgotten and abandoned; but nothing could be further from the truth. Her parents are never around for her and now that Rachel has married Saint, she has no roommate, is struggling to keep a roof over her head and being the proud, self-sufficient woman that she is will not take any “charity” help from her friends. Her dating history is less than stellar and it is this that just heaps insecurity on top of insecurity. Gina needs to see what everyone else sees. She doesn’t need to change for anyone, she just needs to be herself.
“I say – eff good. I want fabulous.”
Katy Evans paced this book perfectly, this is no insta love, this book was torture, angst at its finest. Two people that you know are perfectly suited yet cannot see it for themselves, well they can see it, but both have their insecurities that make them believe they are not worthy. The indecision, the angst, that fighting of feelings and emotions…every single action and reaction I felt, every thought, every glance, every slight touch I felt them to my bones. I was championing these two like a mad woman and I loved the fact that Katy Evans makes us wait, just building and building and building until you have a skyscraper of emotions that is just so vast that when you get that epic climax you have been waiting for your emotions free fall down thousands of floors. Your heart becomes mush and you cannot help but cry with happiness. Yes, I am emotional sap, but tears of happiness is a rarity for me.
“I know that I’m not considered classically pretty. I’m considered more sultry, but Tahoe’s stare right now makes me feel as if I’m both – as if I deserve to be deliciously effed and wonderfully protected. And as if he wants to be the man to do both.”
These two were totally captivating, from the first till last page I was totally invested in their story. Their chemistry was seriously insane and this was one aspect that Katy Evans nailed. You feel them burning and yearning for each other and yet you feel that yearning too, I had butterflies reading this book, that was how connected I became to these characters and their story. But this was not all angst and emotional foreplay, this book had wit and humour too. These characters were also hilarious and this really lightened their story and gave you a real insight into the real Tahoe and Gina. Their banter and dialogue was on point and really showed their true characters. These two may have been pushed together by their best friends, but their emotional pull, their physical pull is all them, just pure unadulterated chemistry and connection that fizzles and sizzles for pages and then literally spontaneously combusts.
I loved EVERYTHING about this story, I adored it, it was simply PERFECT.
This read was an all nighter I couldn't put it down.
I loved the storyline, the characters, the banter, the chemistry was off the charts!!! There was so much angst and anticipation in this book I found myself holding my breath just waiting for it to happen. The growth between Tahoe and Regina was beautifully written!!
It was an emotional read, I found myself wanting to reach through the pages to hug both Tahoe and Regina. The inner demons are felt throughout the story, I felt myself tearing up several times because I could feel the pain the characters held within.
My only issue is that I wish we could have gotten some of Tahoe's POV *sigh* I would loved to have been in his head. LOL!!
This is a must read!! Can be read as a standalone.
Most of the book, our girl is focused on herself and her personal growth (which happens at a snails pace - blink and you'll miss it). At the end of the book, I wasn't even completely convinced I actually LIKED Gina.
The best part: the friendship between Tahoe and Gina. He was definitely there for her, and Katy Evans is very good at showing instead of telling. I think this is a huge reason why her characters feel so authentic and real.
The worst parts: Gina's relationship with that loser (I can't even remember his name). Yes, she had a boyfriend who was NOT Tahoe for a large portion of the book.
The nail in the coffin: If you've read this book, you have to already know what I'm going to say here. You have to. If you haven't already read this book and are debating, well, read this first. Do yourself a favor. Gina's boyfriend (who is not Tahoe) LOSES HIS CONDOM. IN HER VAGINA. And then, Gina CALLS TAHOE AND TELLS HIM ABOUT IT. And he RUSHES OVER TO HER. WHY KATY EVANS, WHY??? WHY?!!!
I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the most unromantic romance ever in the world. When the book was over, because yes, I stuck it out until the bitter end (10 pages of Tahoe and Gina finally together), this is what I was left with. Her boyfriend losing his condom in her freaking vagina, and Gina TELLING TAHOE ABOUT IT after she goes to the hospital and has a doctor fish it out. At this point, they could have overcome world hunger and found a cure for cancer together. All I'm thinking about is that condom.
Romance lovers...you have been warned.
You will hopefully love Regina and Tahoe as much as I did! I enjoyed reading about Regina's journey into her own self discovery. The moment that she decided to happy, despite her past, made me want to hug her. I felt genuine joy for her. And then there was Tahoe! You could see glimpses of his true character throughout the story. Their chemistry was palpable and I loved their banter! The friendship they built felt genuine.
Obviously I kinda thought this was completely amazing! If you are a fan of great chemistry, witty banter, a slow burn, and some sexy scenes, then this book will not disappoint.
Katy Evans is a wonderful author, I truly appreciated her style of writing and the story she created! Job well done, Katy!
