A fantasy-laden Victorian era tale whose fascinating world is filled with drama and adventure. The adventure aspects of the tale are engaging and tense. An entertaining romance set in interesting lands.-- --Foreward Reviews
"Allen's third visit to her lightly supernatural, steampunk fairy tale world is a clever riff on the 'Rapunzel' story that blends exotic undersea travel with a dark mystery and a glee-inducing, respect-first romance between awkward colleagues. The setting seamlessly merges mechanization and magic with Victorian concerns. Allen s comedic writing peaks in Sam s sarcastic automaton butler, Eugene, playing on the tropes of both the overmeticulous British servant and the hypercompetent android. Though the novel stands alone perfectly, series fans will appreciate cameos by the strong heroines of the earlier installments. Readers who love witty adventure-romances between competent, mutually reliant equals will gobble this one up."- --Publishers Weekly
"Allen pens another clever steampunk tale of romantic suspense, this time creating a twist on the story of Rapunzel. Hazel and Sam's sweet courtship is often hilariously interrupted by his sarcastic automaton, and every scene and room on the ship holds deftly crafted surprises as Allen spins a sparkling overlay of romance and humor. The steampunk and fairytale elements make for added fun as Allen continues her excellent, uniquely delightful Steampunk Proper Romance series, following Kiss of the Spindle and Beauty and the Clockwork Beast."--Booklist
"Allen creates a fun and fantastical world to visit." -BookPage
"An unapologetically feisty heroine...What’s simply delightful here is the steampunk world Ms. Allen has created! I didn’t want to leave it, and more notably I wanted to hang out longer with Eugene, Dr. Sam’s saucy automaton, ‘who’ blurs the lines between human and non. The story is firmly rooted in this fantastical world of mechanical horses and telescribers and ray guns, and most deservedly belongs in the series named Proper Romance." -Historical Novel Society
"A deftly scripted steampunk romantic action/adventure fiction retelling of Rapunzel that is set in Victorian England then moves on to the haunted lands of Romania, An extraordinary and entertaining read from beginning to end. Very highly recommended." -Midwest Book Review --This text refers to the paperback edition.

I loved every minute of this story! For one thing, I simply adored the main characters, Hazel and Sam!! They were both so intelligence and talented, but also not overbearingly conceited. I also loved how they're somewhat star-crossed, but also are first and foremost friends and colleagues. Oh, the dialogue between these two! It was fabulous! I even loved Sam's 'ton, Eugene. It was fun to see cameos from the characters from the prior two books, but you don't need to have read those stories to enjoy this one. I also could see a possible romance between Oliver and Emme in the next book (please, please let there be more books coming!!!).
This story was so mysterious. It started with letting readers time to get to know the two main characters, and then introduced the Count who was shrouded in mystery. As the story unfolds, there are pieces of the puzzle revealed here and there, but it's pretty much a guessing game the whole way through. The suspense just grows and grows, intensifying to a climatic ending. I enjoyed that the romance was slow-building and definitely a strong aspect of the story without taking over the more important mystery and Hazel's quest to save her sister.
My one complaint is that I would have liked a little more information on light and dark magiks as well as vampires and how they are in this storybook world as it seems each fictional Steampunk world is a little different. I also couldn't remember exactly what was explained in prior books, so a little more info would have been nice. However, it didn't affect my enjoyment of this story.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This story held my attention from beginning to end. With fabulous characters, witty banter, intensely-growing mystery, and a sweet, swoon-worthy romance set in a Steampunk world... there was nothing more I could ask for. Highly recommended!
Content: Some violence, but would consider this clean.

I really enjoyed watching Hazel and Sam together. Hazel believes her gift is being a Medium however she finds that she is a healer. Since Hazel works for Sam he knew that the balance of power was his so he was so very careful to not cross lines. My absolute favorite character from this book had to be Eugene. When things got tense you could count on him being the balance. He made me laugh so many times.
I guessed Count Petrescu’s big secret shortly after meeting him but there were sometimes when I doubted what I thought I knew. Even knowing what/who he was did not take away from this story for me. I was left guessing what I thought I knew enough times to keep me on my toes.
If you like a good character driven story than this is a great one for you.
