A young woman stands by a line of laundry, clothes billowing in the fierce winds of a Kansas field, as her vision lights on a line of rusted, useless industrial windmills and a shining silver bullet train that flashes past an abandoned station...
The tiny town of Forgotten, KS, USA, late 21st century, resembles itself 200 years in the past. Virtually all utilities of modern life are absent. Life is an endless round of chores: growing and harvesting food -- there are no supermarkets -- drawing water from wells -- there are no water (or sewer) lines -- mending, sewing, and weaving -- there are no clothing stores -- bartering food for necessities -- there is no money. Night is illuminated by candles and oil lamps, heat is tamed with cold baths, damp sheets and an ancient attic fan. Neighbors depend on one another, and enjoy the life they have because "it could be worse". But infections and childbirth can be deadly.
An elderly woman remembers the beauty of Fourth of July fireworks, but evades the question of what they celebrated.
The train halts at the ruined station long enough to expel an exotically handsome young stranger from a world with cars, electric appliances, cell phones, movies, restaurants, modern medicine, and money. It's name is New York. He peppers his conversation with strange words and has never heard of handshakes, marriages, or Jews. He fears the people in Forgotten will reject him because he is different. The young woman befriends him. She has grown to be self-sufficient, resourceful, open-hearted and strong. Together they discover secrets that show them how history, freedom, faith, and civilization itself can be lost, and confront the kind of tyranny that shows why it must be reclaimed.
I felt privileged to spend time with these people in their world! Their restricted environment is nevertheless full of joy and friendship. Esther is such an appealing and inspiring young woman, and the author's startlingly accurate perception of ominous developments that can warp a culture is sobering.
