When the story begins, Tessa's brother has already been apprehended and he is in jail. The rest of the gang is on the lam. Tessa is in hiding from the gang. Her brother double crossed his cohorts and hid the money from their last bank heist. The gang members are looking for Tessa because they believe she knows where her brother has hidden the money. In reality, poor Tessa has no idea where the money is, nor could she care less. As the story begins, Tessa arrives at her new home in town where she is to be the school teacher. Before she can even enter the house, she hears the distressed neighing of a horse. Following the sound she finds Dillon. He has been shot and is lying facedown in a creek. Tessa takes him back to her house and nurses him back to health.
During the time that Dillon and Tessa spend together, deep feelings develop between the two.....though both are fighting those feelings for their own reasons. Dillon is suspicious of Tessa because he knows that she is hiding something. Furthermore, he suffers guilt at his feelings for Tessa because he feels he is betraying his wife's memory. As for Tessa, she feels that Dillon will think less of her if she were to admit that her brother is a criminal. Once Dillon confides in her the facts surrounding his wife's and daughter's deaths, Tessa realizes that it was her brother's gang that had committed the heinous crime. She then firmly believes that once Dillon learns the truth, he will hate her.
This book is full of action, what with a kidnapping, shootouts, lies and deception....it was thrilling to read! The beginning of the story is amazing....this is the time that Dillon and Tessa get to spend alone together and their feelings for each other grow and develop in to love. The latter half of the book is chock full of action! I have to say that the romantic aspect of this book was extremely satisfying. I've read so many books lately that claim to be romances only to be disappointed time and time again by the lack of any actual romance. That is definitely not the case here!
Dillon is a handsome, sexy, strong, reliable type. And Tessa, well Tessa is absolutely wonderful. She is a well drawn character who is a study in contrasts. On the one hand she is very feisty and independent, but on the other hand she can be described as being almost timid. The poor girl can't tolerate any type of violence, the sight of blood makes her want to heave, she won't hold a gun to save her life....and the list goes on and on. LOL I found Tessa's character to be very real. She isn't the superhero type. She has weaknesses and fears that are very realistic for a woman of her time (shoot, for our time too!). Yet, she manages to overcome those weaknesses and fears when called upon to do so, but in a very realistic way......by this I mean she manages to do what needs to be done with a lot of difficulty and trepidation, but she gets it done nonetheless.
The ending of this book was extremely satisfying. And when Tessa confesses her love to Dillon, OMG, I bawled like a baby, it was that touching. I LOVED it! I'd say if you enjoy this genre of books, then this is a must read for you!
