Exceptional Medieval Romance

Against the realistic backdrop of castle intrigue, political treachery, and the royal struggle for power between King Richard and his brother Prince John, the reader enters the lives of Lady Nicola and Fawkes. She is a noblewoman, he a peasant working to be a knight, yet both are forced by the times and morality of the era in which they live to join together to produce an heir for Nicola’s abusive husband Mortimer so he can solidify ownership to Nicola’s inheritance.

Four years later, Fawkes is a full-fledged knight. He’s survived the Crusades and disposed of Mortimer’s assassins. He returns to vanquish Mortimer and free Nicola from her terrible marriage, hoping to win her heart and her lands. Yet Nicola is not certain she can trust the battle-hardened Fawkes with her heart and her dowry. Fawkes is equally unsure he can trust the highly intelligent Nicola who always seems to use deception to maintain control of her castles and lands. Their relationship is further strained by the fact that he has no experience in managing a castle, its workers, and the surrounding lands.

Passion, doubts, lies, and misperceptions abound until both are threatened by treachery within the castle, putting their lives at stake and everything and everyone they hold dear. Will one pay the ultimate sacrifice to save the other or will love somehow win out? A good solid story with a good believable ending.

Set in the 12th century, beginning in 1189, this is the story of Lady Nicola and Fawkes de Cressy, one of King Richard’s knights. The tale begins as Lady Nicola’s abusive and wicked husband, who doesn’t desire women, forces her to have sex with Fawkes to conceive an heir. They share one day of passion and, thereafter, Fawkes goes off to fight in the Crusade.

When Fawkes returns, King Richard awards him Nicola’s lands, the holdings of his enemy, who Fawkes promptly slays in combat. Nicola, is afraid to tell Fawkes that a child she hides is his because she doesn’t trust him. Once they shared passion, now they must learn to trust in the face of deception and enemies all around.

It seemed that the hero and heroine mistrusted each other for one reason or another for most of the book, notwithstanding that they were sleeping together. The heroine is a strong-willed woman who asserts herself in decisions affecting the castle’s management and, fortunately, the hero admires her for it. Lots of subplots and many characters add to the story including a healer, several knights and a few villains (one a jealous female). Gillgannon pays attention to details that give the story an authentic feel.

It’s a medieval adventure that fans of Gillgannon will enjoy.

A beleaguered romance

An adventure romance set in medieval times, Lady of Steel explored some of the realities of that era, from the history of the time to women’s rights and lifestyle in a castle with its community. Whilst I enjoyed the book, I did find that the story made some jumps, leaving the reader to make assumptions about what happened in the intervening period. At times I found the dialogue slowed the story down. It also seemed strange that after all the years that Lady Nicola served her community, there was so little trust in her. In particular, I would have liked to give Reynard a shake as his snap judgements did more harm than good. Fawkes was an interesting hero and whilst his heart didn’t waver, his intellect had a hard time sorting out fact from fiction. The story was generally well written with a good flow of language and came to a happy ending for the beleaguered couple, however there were some loose ends regarding the outcome of those who conspired against them. Lady Nicola was born into her position and forced to marry a horrible man. He was terrible to her. In one of his many bad deeds she was introduced to Fawkes de Cressy. They both fell in love with each other over their short period of knowing each other but both forced into their own direction. But they kept each other in their own minds and that was their driving force. When they meet up again both have had some changes in their lives, although Fawkes did have more changes than her but that is best for you to read and find out. Of course the bad guys were bad an unlikable and the good guys were good and troubled.
The biggest problem for the main characters is that they had no honest communication and danced around subjects that they really needed to talk about. They both had mistrust of each other for their own reasons even though they loved each other. It had a good happy ending.
I did like the story. Good quick read.

Wedded to a man who had been awarded control of her lands and had no use for women, Lady Nicola is forced to bed a stranger, Fawkes de Cressy, for the purpose of begetting an heir. Fawkes spends four years fighting in the Crusades with King Richard hoping to gain title to the lands and return to claim the woman he cannot forget. When they meet again, he holds the title and she becomes his wife. He discovers that their physical attractions are mutual but they are both hardened by circumstances of their lives. He is possessive and jealous and rumors are that she is withholding secrets from him. Neither trusts the other and they both become aware that they have enemies who are plotting to take the lands. Nicola and Fawkes are strong characters that draw the reader into the story and are surrounded by a good supporting cast. The question is whether the can overcome their differences, protect their lands and build a future. "I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book.
