Review

Orlande de Lassus was one of the most productive and multi-talented composers of the sixteenth century. Although he is celebrated today for his church music, in his own time he was just as well known for his attractive and accessible secular works. His swansong, the Lagrime di San Pietro, unites the sacred and secular facets of his art in a series of 20 sacred madrigals (and a final motet) completed just three weeks before his death in 1594. Although the textbooks wax on about the importance of their cyclical organization (all setting texts from Luigi Tansillo's Lagrime di San Pietro) and their unusual seven-voice scoring (seven symbolizes suffering), the thing that really stands out is what one contemporary described as the composer's ability 'to bring to life an object (or thought) almost as if it were before one's eyes'. There is an intensity in this music that's rare in any age. In Lassus's case, the works seem to have been the product of a period of deep introspection and depression which dogged his last years; indeed, he even sought treatment for 'religious melancholia'. Yet the lasting value of these madrigals is nothing so vulgar as heart-on-sleeve soul-searching. The Lagrime perfectly illustrate the description of Lassus's style given by his Parisian friend Adrien Le Roy: pressus et limatus – 'concise and refined'. The seven singers of the Ensemble Vocal Europeen understand this intuitively and negotiate the tricky path between the overt manner of the madrigal and the austere style of the motet with great sensitivity. Still a first choice, and now a bargain. Simon Heighes -- From International Record Review - subscribe now
