By the end of 1973, the Allman Brothers Band seemed to have it all nailed down. They'd proven their mettle with a fine synthesis of blues, jazz, folk, and country influences; expanded upon it with the definitive Fillmore East set; and moved forward after the separate losses of guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley. The group's myriad strengths, in fact, might've been the reason that one of their most obvious gifts--Gregg Allman's pained, growling voice--was sometimes overlooked. Laid Back, Gregg Allman's first solo disc, seems in part an effort to gain a little more recognition. It worked, particularly given the strong radio response to its opening track, a loping remake of "Midnight Rider." Likewise, much of the album's remainder finds Allman tweaking the band's blues ("Queen of Hearts") and country sides (a cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days"); horns and gospelish backing vocals add to the personal, often mournful feel. Much more coherent than its dated cover art (an either childlike or blasted-out-of-his-gourd Gregg ignoring a blazing volcano) indicates, Laid Back is an often convincing version of the man's music. Stunning

Gregg Allman's debut album, Laid Back, is a stunner. Just don't go in thinking you're going to hear the long and awesome jams of the Allman Brothers Band. This is a look into Gregg's soulful side. The musicianship throughout is top notch, more steeped in rhythm and blues with plenty of horns and strings and of course, Gregg's organ playing. The title of this album is very appropriate since most of the songs are slower, putting a lot of emphasis on Gregg's voice, which was still an American treasure at the time this was recorded. The big hit is his remake of "Midnight Rider", which would become the more definitive version with its arrangement more akin to something out of an old Western. He also remakes his own "Please Call Home", giving it more of a gospel feel. "Don't Mess Up a Good Thing" is a cool honky tonk tune that is the only song played at a faster tempo. "Queen of Hearts" plays like a classic with its arrangement and jazzy solos while the oft-covered Jackson Browne track, "These Days", is given an old-country feel that works very well. "All My Friends" and the standard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" are also very strong, more gospel than country with the backing vocals making these tracks even better. And as great as all of these songs are, it's his own "Multi-Colored Lady", that shows the man at his best. In fact, I'd say this song is on par with the best songs he wrote with the Allman Brothers Band, a band whose music I have loved for 25 years. All told, Laid Back is a classic album from one of the great American voices in music. Highly recommended.

Brilliant CD---way ahead of it's early 70's time. Listen again after many yrs.---it will blow you away once again--did me!!! :0

This wonderful early c.d. takes me back to some really great years. I find I still have so much of this CD still in my head from many years ago---like my early teen years....Thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane. Gregg Allman and crew were/are still so ahead musically. God Bless the band and Mr. Allman amazes me with his incredibly strong will to not only keep living after all he has been through---but that he still gives so much of his very soul to share with those who can appreciate these mostly original G.A. written songs. He adds his own touch and flavor to songs written by the likes of another favorite===Mr. Jackson Browne. Also love hearing Mr. chuck Levell on keyboards along with Allman. Pray you keep enjoying the legacy for a long time----all of you!!!! Derek Trucks has added a new generation and level of playing.....along with Warren Haynes. I do not miss Mr. Betts one bit......I do not think that bothers him one bit!!.

A great album from the voice of the Allman Brothers

A great album from the voice of the Allman Brothers. If you are expecting this to sound like a Brothers album you're in for a surprise. This is, as the title states, very "Laid Back" compared to anything the Brothers put out with the exception of "Melissa". The first track is a swampy reworking of "Midnight Rider" and leads into "Queen of Hearts", another great Allman original. The highlight for me is his version of the Jackson Browne song "These Days", and Allman's voice is perfect for the world weariness the lyrics read. I'll admit it is a little slow and moody in some places, but I'd recommend this album to any fan of classic southern rock/soul or even country.

A masterpiece of modern blues music

"Laid Back" is a masterpiece of modern blues music as only a white singer like Greg Allman could create. I've always compared Greg's voice to Ray Charles, and this particular album is like sitting back and listening to a great Ray Charles album. Not much guitar but lots of superb piano and Hammond organ riffs, accentuated by a horn section, strings and a small choir. The remastered sound is clearer than I remember the vinyl album sounding. Great songs, great singing, great instrumentation and production. Keep in mind that it's not a rock & roll album but a rather laid back experience. Pour a glass of wine or brandy, have a smoke and enjoy.

I have loved this album for more than 40 years

I have loved this album for more than 40 years. It's a favorite from my high school years (released in 1973). "Queen of Hearts" is beautiful. Gregg Allman's expressive and soulful voice is captivating. He proves that R&B and soul has no color. Some of the music labeled "rock" of this era was a fusion of R&B, country, jazz, and folk all performed with real instruments (as opposed to electronic), real voices, and God given pure talent. The inclusion of a gospel song at the end is so unexpected and just lovely. I discovered my appreciation of country from this style of rock music. I listen to this music as if it just came out yesterday. So I bought the album again.

****4+1/2 Stars**** Gregg's Very Best Solo Effort

Jackson Browne's "These Days" was such a fitting anthem for Brother Gregg Allman back in '73 when Laid Back was released. I remember seeing the ABB on Thanksgiving night in 1971 at Carnegie Hall. It was their first concert following the tragic death of Duane Allman. I never would have thought The Allman Brothers Band would perform "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Gospel?...The Brothers?....Yea Right! But there it was at the end of that very memorable evening. I watched Gregg as he shared with the audience his pain and his grief, and something more.

That something more manifested itself two years later with this very rewarding debut solo effort. It took those two years for him to reflect upon his first five years on the road. Three years with his big brother and the next two years without him. Gregg was truly inspired to lay down his finest vocal performance ever and "Queen of Hearts" delivers just that. What feeling! what depth! just stunning! The two ABB covers, "Please Call Home" and "Midnight Rider" evoke the deep loss and agonizing despair of burying Brother Duane and then reopening the wound just one year later with the loss a of original band member Berry Oakley.

Not without it's faults, Laid Back is my favorite solo album by Gregg. It took courage and it took fortitude for Gregg to stay the course. I'm sure he knew in his heart it was what Duane would have expected of him. Till this day, when I listen to Laid Back, I can't help but see his face before me on that long ago Thanksgiving night. Hurt beyond belief, but determined to go on and go on he did. Keep on keeping on Brother and thanks for all the great music and wonderful memories along the way.
