This is a hard one, Lots of missed opportunities here

Ok, so out of the gate, I'd like to complement the cinematography team for having excellent camera work and timing - this is the backbone of movie success. That aside, I was intrigued by this film mainly due to the advertised creature head on the rental that is displayed. Creature fanatics like myself thrive on hive or lone creatures that have a strong back story and that are "just enough" not humanoid to be recognized as a stunt-person in a costume. This is where the movie lost me, I was all in on this due to the preview which offered "creepy creature" meets "mysterious beginnings". The excitement was prolonged by the one moment I believe the CGI and cinematography got right - the moment the creature is looking out of the door after having attacked the main heroin and "chitters" its multiple jaws and recedes into the darkness... perfection. After that it's downhill. Don't get me wrong, I had high hopes for this film, but the problem lies with lazy costume design and misrepresentation. When I saw the cover I expected a beast of other (or mixed) origin that had a skull slightly inverted with multiple sockets (whether eyes or otherwise). What we were presented with was a person in a rubber suite with a bulbous head that did not resemble the creature we were promised. Post main scene we were thrown sloppy "creature flailing" and the absolute waste of either ammunition or blanks - which could have monetarily been avoided due to their poor implementation and curbed budget costs. If any of the people that fund these movies could take a hint, it is that we aren't necessary opposed to "humanoids", we just don't want to feel overly familiar with them when there is supposed to be an element of fear involved. So let's tangent and talk about zombies - Ok, I am afraid of them because I know what to expect, I may die, or I might get bitten and turn into one of them - Oh No! predictable and BOOOORIIING. If I never saw another zombie movie for the rest of my life I think I'd be okay. Creatures on the other hand are held to a completely different standard, the second you start trying to mix a creature movie with the LAZYNESS of zombies then you have lost a lot of us. Here are some great examples: Mimick, The Thing, the Relic, Alien, Aliens, The Host, the Monster (2016), and the one that started it all for me - the creature from the black lagoon (which is super humanoid but we forgive this because it's iconic). Listen, some people like zombies and basic/lazy humanoid implementation or gore and the rest of us like the intense creativity of "It doesn't quite look like us, what is it". At the end of the day I gave this two stars because I respect the cinematography and timing of those that were filming - they knew what they were doing. What ended it for me was the direction of the actors (as the actors themselves weren't bad), and the poorly implemented "bulbous" humanoids that wrecked the screen with their rubber claws and sloppy/lazy implementation which didn't represent what was advertised to me at all. My ending thoughts are simple: keep the actors, definitely keep the cinematography team, but ditch the director, some of the writers and contract a creature effects team that is completely the opposite of the one you hired. Creature humanoids should have at least three joints in their feet to keep us interested, and their heads should most definitely not look like a person wearing a helmet or face mask.

Dog Soldiers was a fun, campy movie about werewolves. Neil's second outing, The Descent, was a step up, giving us a very tense, claustrophobic horror film that I loved. Centurion, as well as Doomsday(more camp but I'm a sucker for Mad Max style flicks). Needless to say, when I found out he was helming the latest Hellboy film, I was excited. I wanted to see what he could do...Hoo boy. What a fall, as this iteration was terrible in every conceivable way(to be fair, though, Del Toro's Hellboy films are fun and exciting and classic, and this Marshall remake was just sad and pathetic). Thus we arrive to his other film The Reckoning, starring his scandal ridden girlfriend Charlotte "I totally didn't try and sleep my way into movie rolls and blackmail billionaires" Kirk. That, too, was awful. Now we come to The Lair. Call me a masochist, but I had to see just how badly Neil Marshall fell from what was the start of a great career. It was every bit as dreadful as I thought. First thing we see is the writing credits (Marshall and Kirk both wrote this mess), as well as a photo of Kirk and Marshall with a child in the film. Take that, ya filthy billionaire hollywood studio execs. This was a poor attempt at making Dog Soldiers, The Descent, add in some completely ripped off moments from Cameron's ALIENS, and there you go. Jamie Bamber's "southern accent" was anything but. It was something, that's for sure. The other brit in the film spoke with a very strange accent, of which most of the time I couldn't understand. Kirk, however, takes the prize. Marshall's direction of her lines and actions are dreadful. She's beautiful, no doubt, but her portrayal of this forgettable British Pilot who "totally flew 28 combat missions in three tours, yet can't practice anything remotely resembling trigger safety and room sweeps" is atrocious. Ratner, Tsujihara, Meyer and Packer were right in not promoting her or getting her roles. Kirk is NOT A GOOD ACTRESS. Drying wallpaper has more emotional range than this woman. The rest of the cast, forgettable as well, was just as bad. I hope this is the end for Neil, because this is painful to watch. Once a promising Sam Raimi type of movie director, now relegated to straight to Syfy channel levels of bad(not the good fun bad like Sharknado). So AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE. I took one for the team, so you don't have to...unless you are a masochist as well.
