I would say this is Joan Severance's best movie. Since appearing in small roles in See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Bird on a Wire, she has been relegated to B-movie erotica, but she has given it her best. She truly is an exquisite creature, with mesmerizing blue eyes and an incredible body.
She is perfect as the sexually repressed housewife who stumbles into a sexual liaison with her gardener, played by Billy Zane, and his sometime lover May Karasun. Like others have said, the photography at the lake in the movie is stunning and adds tremendously to its sensual appeal.
The movie takes a downturn into negativity with the revelations about the Severance character's painful past, at which point the sensuality is abruptly cut off. Talk about coitus interruptus! But it is still a captivating, memorable movie.

If ever there was a movie that explained a woman's mind this would be it. Women are portrayed so often as solid creatures that know exactly what they want. The men are always the ones who are confused and stray. What I think is important here is how this movie explains what goes on in a woman's mind. What a woman must sacrifice Women are sensual creatures by nature, and as Billy pointed out near the end "real life and romance do not generally go hand in hand". I think all to often women sacrifice their sensual side for that of family and security. This movie defiantly hits home to a lot of women and their own fantasies.

This erotic drama is a keeper. It definitely appeals to the senses. Hot steaming chinese baths, firecrackers. Passion, passion, passion all around. You will love it. Never thought acupunture could look so exhilirating. Billy Zane -- whoo, baby! Wonderfully sexy film.

Definitely some willing suspension of disbelief required with the plot. The characterization is odd, but works (mostly), though there are places in the middle where Severence's character does some things -out- of character.
Some of the plot devices seemed extremely forced, but I will say that some of the sex scenes were incredibly hot and erotic.
An excellent psychological tension was building among the characters, but ruined by how the script ended the bath house scene, and by some of the oddly chosen cut-aways during the scene. After the end of that scene, you dont really get the tension between the characters back, and the rest of the movie seems to be trying to explain away the previous actions of the characters.
Not a bad flick, but the acting was much better than the script deserved.

This is Joan Severance's best-known role, and there is good reason why. My goodness, she is absolutely captivating! If ever there was a role where an actress could set the film on-fire, this is it. She has a mysterious, demure beauty that so intoxicates me. Wow!

Joan portrays a bored housewife who is having a sort of mid-life crisis. Her husband is a decent man, treats her well and she lives an upscale lifestyle. However, she finds herself "missing" something in her life. She starts to gravitate towards a penniless, buffed-up tree-trimmer (Billy Zane). Eventually, she must choose between the fantasy & reality.

To add to the dynamic, she suffered a traumatic sexual encounter as a teen that has left her scarred, confused and a bit twisted in the sexual sphere. During the film, she discovers that there is more to her erotic dimension than she once thought.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the plot is that the love-triangle differs from most. In the majority of the movies of this type, the 3rd party (in this case, Zane's character) is trying to steal the woman away from her husband. In this case, Zane's beneficent persona knows full-well that her husband will offer a much better life than what he is capable of. And, he has a remorse for possibly interfering with her relationship w/her son.

All in all, if (like me!) you're a fan of erotic movies which do not shy away from a surplus of nudity, then you can't do much better than this film! There is an obvious symbolic gesture in the name of the lake where she pursues her fantasy; in life, we will never be bereft of consequences for our actions.

I thought it would end up being just another sleazy Zalman King movie with a plot that's as light as whipped cream and weird fantasies that involve women in submissive situations. But it turned out that it was actually a cool movie! The scenery is great (it made me wish they spent more time at Lake Consequence rather than the asian bathhouse), the acting is amazing for this kind of movie, and it has heart and feeling to it. Very steamy, very worth checking out!

Being a sucker for Severance since her debut in the Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor "See No Evil, Hear No Evil", every one of her films is a must-see for me, HOWEVER...
This film is her finest. An adequate though undistinguished actress, this film has best exploited her innate sensuality and statuesque beauty. Combine her with the undeniably leonine Zane, and a few stunning supporting actors, and a bored housewife's daydream-fantasy-come-true plot, and you have a recipe for a steamy mouth watering cinematic broth which will NOT dissappoint.
Prospective viewers MUST choose the unrated version, unless they find heightened sapphic sensuality offensive.
