Review

“Nancy Guthrie has made the Old Testament come alive again. She connects the gospel dots from the Old Testament to the New, showing us the shadow and then the reality of Jesus Christ, who was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. More than once I saw Jesus in a new and remarkably beautiful way. This study has grown my love for our Savior.”
Jessica Thompson, author, Everyday Grace; coauthor, Give Them Grace

“User-friendly, biblically reliable, theologically astute, enthusiastically sensible, encouragingly realistic, and deeply Christ-centered—all without losing sight of the fact that the Bible student is to be a disciplined ‘workman (or woman) who does not need to be ashamed.’ Once again we are deeply indebted to Nancy Guthrie for giving the church an outstanding Bible study resource to help us all grow in the grace, knowledge, and wisdom of God.”
Sinclair B. Ferguson, Professor of Systematic Theology, Redeemer Seminary, Dallas, Texas

“I can think of few people who are better able to make the Old Testament come alive in as accessible, balanced, and Christ-centered way as Nancy Guthrie, and she has done it again! There is perhaps no greater theme in all Scripture than that of Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away our sin, and it is impossible to understand what that description means without seeing it through Old Testament eyes. Nancy helps us do this with her typical clarity and passionate sensitivity to the story line of the Bible. You will find your thinking stretched, your soul fed, and your heart thrilled by her work.”
Liam Goligher, Senior Minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; author, The Jesus Gospel

“As the title says, this book—and the entire series—is about Jesus. Instead of simply telling the stories of the Old Testament and teaching us how to be a better, more successful person, The Lamb of God points us over and over to the one who did it all for us. How refreshing and inspiring to bask in my Savior's love for me—to be loved and accepted because of what Christ has done and not because of what I have done. Nancy’s exhaustive research, her facility in writing, and her thought-provoking questions make these studies both challenging and enjoyable. I cannot wait to lead the women in my group through each of her studies!”
Maureen Kyle, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City

“Nancy Guthrie masterfully draws out from the shadows the rich, Christ-centered content and themes inherent in Exodus to Deuteronomy. This book provides a needed stepping stone for those seeking a gradual introduction into biblical theology. It is a rare thing to see an author combine such rich redemptive history, natural readability, and vital applicability, but The Lamb of God achieves just that.”
Jared Oliphint , Regional Coordinator, Westminster Theological Seminary; contributor, Reformed Forum

“In a warm, personal style, Nancy Guthrie opens up Old Testament books to reveal truths of salvation woven into every page. I am always looking for wonderful Bible studies to offer the ladies in our church, and I can’t wait to recommend this book!”
Liz Emerson, pastor’s wife; mother; grandmother

“Nancy Guthrie has provided yet another solid, practical, and thoroughly biblical study guide navigating the rich literature of the Pentateuch. We’ve used earlier volumes in this series at Parkside and have been encouraged to see people begin to connect the rich prophecies and narratives of the Old Testament to their great fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The layout of the book, the well-written studies, and the substantial questions make for a robust study guide that will challenge your people to truly see Jesus!”
Jonathan Holmes, Counseling Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio

“As a children’s ministry director who teaches a young women’s Bible study, I love the fact that Nancy teaches in adult language and application what we seek to teach our children—that even in the Old Testament stories we see how Jesus has been in the process of redeeming us. Nancy is a master storyteller and teacher who consistently helps us see the redemptive truth of Scripture and apply that truth where we live in the real moments of everyday life.”
Sherry Kendrick, Children’s Ministry Director, Covenant Church of Naples, Naples, Florida

“I am thankful to God to be able to offer Nancy Guthrie’s series Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament to the women of our church. For too long studies have led us only to see what we are to do. Now we can see through the pages of this series what Jesus has done! With Nancy’s help, the story of redemption jumps off the pages of the Old Testament, and the truths of the gospel are solidified in women’s hearts and lives.”
Jo Coltrain, Director of Women’s Ministry, First Evangelical Free Church, Wichita, Kansas

Guthrie's Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series is a great option for Christians seeking to understand the Bible's overarching narrative and the ways in which it tells one Story, with one central Conflict and one Hero. In writing this series, Guthrie's burden is especially for Christian women who have a deep-seated curiosity about the Bible and a hunger for God and yet seem to only find treacle and fluff in the "Women's Bible Study" section of the Christian bookstore.

Readers familiar with Edmund Clowney's work might find themselves in already explored territory here, and yet I think most Christians would agree that we can never spend too much time dwelling on how Christ fulfills the OT types and shadows. With gentleness and humility, Guthrie tackles some hard passages in this particular edition of the series, which takes readers though Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Most memorable for me include her discussion of the tabernacle and her moving explanation of Jesus' relationship to the ritual clean/unclean laws of Leviticus.

There were times when, in this study, I desired to dig more deeply into the text before moving on, but I also acknowledge that Guthrie is going for breadth over depth, and I think this quality makes her series a wonderful introduction to this particular section of the Bible.

The Jesus Moses Wrote About: a book review.
By matichuk

The Lamb of God: Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy by Nancy Guthrie
One of the ways that Christians approach the Old Testament is with an eye to see where it reveals Jesus Christ. This could be through direct prophecy, poetic and symbolic allusions or through reading the text typologically. In patristic and medieval exegesis this became somewhat fanciful, but the Reformers and their evangelical heirs have also followed a similar method, albeit in a chastened manner. In The Lamb of God, author Nancy Guthrie explores where Jesus is revealed in four of the books of the Pentateuch (the Torah): Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. She writes from the conviction that Jesus himself declared, " For if you believe Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. (John 5:46)."

So in a 10-week Bible study she explores the various ways that Christ is revealed in this part of the Old Testament:

In the burning bush
In Israel's deliverance from Egypt (the Exodus) and especially Passover.
In the giving of the law on Sinai
In the details and design of the Tabernacle.
In the manna
In the water from a rock
In the sacrificial system
In the wilderness wanderings and through symbols of salvation (like the bronze serpent)
In and through God's covenant relationship with his people Israel.
Guthrie is a gifted Bible teacher and has her readers explore the text in various ways. Each of the ten sections begin with a section for personal Bible study in which Guthrie provides guided questions to help readers engage the biblical text. This is followed by a `Teaching Chapter' where she presents her understanding of the significant themes in the text.

"For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of Me."
John 5:46

The Lamb of God: Seeing Jesus in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy is the second book from Nancy Guthrie's Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series that I've had the privilege of working through. I've been eager to read more of these since I first reviewed The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis last year.

I've been working through The Lamb of God alongside my Bible reading plan and it is fantastic! The format for this study is the same as in The Promised One. Each week (except the first week) begins with a "Personal Bible Study" section that guides the reader through the passage for the week with questions, charts, and related Scripture passages, followed by the meat of the study, called the"Teaching Chapter". The teaching chapter is followed by a short section called "Looking Forward", which is designed to show how what we've just studied gives insight into what is still to come when Christ returns. Finally, there's a short discussion guide meant to be used in group studies.

The ten weeks cover:

A Prophet Like Me
Slavery and a Savior (Exodus 1-4)
Plagues and Passover (Exodus 5-12)
Salvation and Provision (Exodus 13-17)
The Giving of the Law (Exodus 19-24)
The Tabernacle (Exodus 25-40)
The Priesthood (Exodus 28-29)
Sacrifice and Sanctification (Leviticus)
In the Wilderness (Numbers)
Love and Obey (Deuteronomy)

As you can see, the majority of the book (seven of ten weeks) is spent on the book of Exodus, and just like in the first volume, it continually ties every passage to the larger story of redemption. The continuity of Scripture is something I think is absolutely essential to grasp.

There are several approaches to reading and interpreting the Bible. The use of these methods usually point back to what the individual student of the scriptures believes about the text. For the students of scripture who hold the belief that the Word of God is authoritative and trustworthy, that it is a divine revelation from a Holy God, reading Nancy Guthrie's bible study The Lamb of God is exciting.

Basing the premise of the study on the words of Jesus Christ in John 5:46, where Jesus claims that Moses wrote about His coming and His work, Guthrie teaches her readers a proper approach to studying the Old Testament. For those who have long read the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy and wondered, "How do these apply to my life today" Guthrie gives great help and insight into seeing the scriptures come alive as she uncovers for her readers the redemptive thread that ties the whole Bible together. She helps her readers see Jesus in the Old Testament. Some examples that Guthrie brings out include the Hebrews' deliverance from Egypt, the sacrificial lamb, the giving of the law, manna from heaven, water from the rock, and circumcision of the heart. This is the great strength of the book, presented in weekly bible study form so that the reader must personally engage himself in the process of discovery.

The weakness of this book is in the length of the study. To take on the task of presenting Christ in the Pentateuch is difficult. The material is wonderful, the chapters are excellently written, but there is so much more that could be drawn out of the scriptures. Each book could be a study of its own.

What Nancy Guthrie has produced, however, is excellent. The study would be helpful to anyone who works through the material. I would recommend this book for small group studies, women's book studies, or even a personal study.
