Dorothy Eden (1912–1982) was the internationally acclaimed author of more than forty bestselling gothic, romantic suspense, and historical novels. Born in New Zealand, where she attended school and worked as a legal secretary, she moved to London in 1954 and continued to write prolifically. I've been re-reading books by Dorothy Eden that I read many years ago. This one wasn't a favorite. I made myself finish because I bought it but I felt it dragged on and on and surely no one would be as dumb as the heroine?

Spoiler alert! I didn't love this one. It's a page turner but not very moving or convincing. The first half is very intriguing and gets you hooked. But then it gets confusing. the main character is suspicious of everyone with regards to the disappearance of her best friend but in the midst of this she doesn't mind accepting a proposal of marriage from a forty old man who likes and collects dolls (weirdo), and then in the end her true love is a man that's left her for another women and didn't seem to try very hard at all to convince her of his love. I do enjoy her novels but this one was a disappointment!

Not my fav of Dorothy Eden's books. Nice local color. Couple of loose ends that I would have preferred that she tied up. Slow to me until third quarter. Not a real gothic romantic suspense format. Short read for those who don't like long books. Moderate character development. I did like Ravenscroft better, though it's not a gothic in the tradition of Lady of Mallow, Mistress of Mellyn, Legend of the Seventh Virgin, Emerald Station, Nine Coaches Waiting, etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and finished it in an evening. From the very start it grabbed my interest, and kept me wanting to know all the way through what was going on, and what was next going to happen. There were some wonderful, classic vintage gothic mystery moments, which I loved, and I really hadn't guessed almost to the very last pages who the "villain" was, amongst some interesting and believable characters. I also found it enjoyable that that this was set in New Zealand, for the depiction of life in and near a small village/hamlet near New Zealand 's Southern Alps in the 1950s - especially the depiction of nature, with mention of different NZ birds, trees, flora and fauna - made for an atmospheric and exotic setting.
