"In Lambeth: Visions From The Walled Garden Of William Blake" is another beautiful album by the Frisell-Wollesen-Emanuel trio. As with its predecessors, this is a flower in John Zorn's mystic series. The music is always meditational and peaceful but never new agey. John Zorn proves that music doesn't have to lack substance to be relaxing. Now referred to as The Gnostic Trio, this group has an original sound. Indeed, nothing else out there sounds like this given the musicians, the unusual instrumentation and the group's musical formula. Naturally, Bill Frisell is the standout. His signature guitar sound is all over "In Lambeth." As on 'Through the Looking Glass,' he does beautiful lead work over the occasional loop. Frisell shows how the electric guitar can be powerful not despite being gentle but because it is restrained and softhearted. Carol Emanuel plays a strong supportive role on the harp. Kenny Wollesen creates a mystical ambiance with the vibes and bells. 'Tiriel' sets the mood. Emanuel stretches out on 'A Morning Light.' 'America, a prophecy' is one of the more melodically satisfying offerings. 'Puck' is anxious and intense. Zorn always has one dark song on his melodic albums. Here, it's "The Minotaur" which is enhanced by Ikue Mori's electronics. The climactic song may be 'The Night of Enitharmon's Joy.' It's pure enchantment. 'The Walled Garden' makes for a peaceful closer. Comparing "In Lambeth" to the group's previous work, it is stronger than "The Gnostic Preludes" and on an even footing with "The Mysteries.Read more ›

Zorn is amazing with his prolific output. The only thing missing is some accompanying literature regarding Blake's inspiration. What was it about Blake's ( to borrow from Wikipedia) "...expressiveness and creativity, and... philosophical and mystical undercurrents..." that John Zorn was considering, processing, reacting, and trying to get the musicians to convey. Zorn does not have to answer to anyone, and probably would tell me where to shove it, but I'd like to understand more, and appreciate being inspired to investigate Blake's writing again and in more depth. I imaging listening to this CD while reading WB would be copacetic.

Another great one by John Zorn with the one and only Bill Frisell on guitar. On par with Gnostic Preludes.
