As others have noted, the manufacturing quality of this seems lacking. In order for the float to actually seal the opening, I had to sand/file off all the rough edges. Although, I'm glad I didn't have to remove material from the housing itself, since the housing itself just feel flimsy, although at this point I have nothing to suggest that it will not be durable.
However, after these modifications, it does a good job of keeping the outside air out of the dryer vent. There is no longer any condensation and I have no problems with clothes that smell of mildew when left in the dryer. If I had to do it again, I'd probably order the similarly designed, more expensive Heartland vent, as it seems that it does not carry the same manufacturing-related issues.
It's entirely my fault, but this is a lot larger than the picture led me to believe. I was expecting something about 1/3 the size of the item that arrived. Next time, I'll pay closer attention to the dimensions. If you're mounting this on the back of a house or somewhere where the size isn't an issue, then don't worry about the size. If your dryer vent empties onto your patio as mine does, this unit may just seem a little too big and in the way.
Easy to install
Easy to clean the trapped lint out (should not happen that often but in case)
Vents down instead of out and at an angle.
Keeps critters and cold drafts out.
Cons:It's fairly big and sticks out from the house.
I had a roll of aluminum flashing, so I cut a section of that and put in the exhaust pipe, sticking out a couple of inches. I made sure it reached the end of the pipe inside the house and fit far enough into the vent on the outside. Pushing the unit against the house at the top and bottom fastening points, there was a gap of about 1/2" right above the vent pipe. I put some silicone in there before placing the vent on the house. After I attached it with six screws (not supplied), I pumped in as much silicone caulking as I could.
Without the inner cup inside the vent, there was a definite strong flow of cold air into the house. After putting the cup back in, the draft stopped. I'm hopeful this will keep more of the cold out of the house.
Another thing to consider is clearance for mounting this rather large vent. Our back door swings out toward the house, which extends past the door. If the distance between the house and the door was less or the size of the vent was more, they would collide.
