I was expecting a heftier cleaver. The description said it was 4 pounds and the best cleaver I had used, my dad's 60 year old cleaver, was probably 6 or 7 pounds. So, when I got this and it feels like it's slightly over 2.5 pounds... well I almost called and complained. Then I felt the blade. The blade feels as sharp as some chef's knives I've used. Additionally, the handle and the balance are fabulous. I made short work of some redfish bones for stock first. Then, I stepped up and chopped a chicken with ease. Then, the real test: quick chopping pork brisket bones (i.e. rib tips). Before I started chopping, I did run the cleaver through my manual sharpener 8 - 10 strokes. I cut through the bones quickly and made 1/8 slices of the bones for rib tips without this cleaver ever not chopping cleanly through. This thing is what the old time cleavers that weigh 6 or 7 lbs but at a 1/3 of that weight with perfect balance. I'd buy it again and again. The only downside is I wish it came in a black handle to match my other cutlery.

Let me start by saying I really like Lamson Sharp and own some of their forged knives. They generally make a quality product that should outlive you. This was not the case with the Cleaver. The blade is poorly stamped metal, with rough edges. The grip was wood, but was also rough and the logo was poorly stamped (stamped twice making it unreadable). The wood for the grip was also uneven and each side was slightly different size. Overall I had bought this as a gift and returned it. It is not the worst cleaver in the world, but for 1/5th the price you can get the same thing from other brands here on amazon.

All in all they make great forged knives, but if you are looking for that same quality build look else ware for a cleaver.

I bought this cleaver because it was recommended by America's Test Kitchen as a "Best Buy" for meat cleavers. Having never used a cleaver before, I was worried about the weight and being able to use it correctly. This cleaver is light-weight but still cuts through bone and meat easily.

I have been using this to chop up chicken, turkey necks, and rabbit. It goes through easily and the blade is sharp. I am docking one star due to the wooden handle. I hand wash this knife only (it has never been through the dishwasher) and the wood feels rough on my hands. But seeing as I do not use this knife often, and it functions great, I do not really see this as a huge problem for the cost of the knife.

I received the cleaver tonight, it is lighter than I expected at 13.75 ounces, being made from stamped steel rather than forged. Its crudely sharpened, but good enough to do the job.

The reason I returned it is that it did not give the dimensions in the listing, and at 4-3/8 wide, it will not fit the 4 inch slot in my knife rack. Many of the listings do not give a size or accurate weight, which makes it hard to shop for what I want.

The Good ... Made in the USA. I'd keep it for that alone if it would fit my rack.

I bought this after noticing that chopping chicken bones was permanently denting my chef's knife. As-delivered the sharpened edge had a noticeable burr, but running it through the finest setting of my ChefsChoice knife shapener a few times cleaned that up. Seems to work fine now. A cleaver is not something I use every day by any means, so I was happy with this one for the price.

Not as nice as I had hoped for the $$. Has to be specially sharpened due to the custom angle (atypical compared to knives, even santokus). Heavy blade, but not very strong when sharpened. Heavy so I thought it would go through bone easier than it does.

I never really thought that I needed a cleaver until I started making a whole lot of chicken broth, so I bought this cleaver to cut the bones up and make boiling faster. It works extremely well for that job. In addition, this cleaver makes me feel really cool, so that's a plus.

The handle is rough wood--not at all smooth to touch. It feels like I need to take some sandpaper to it to smooth it out. But the knife cuts through butternut squash and chicken bones effortlessly.
