- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2017Pen works great, and is definitely the genuine Lamy, no knockoff. Lamy ink provided with the pen is ok, if a bit wet compared to the Pilot Metropolitan I have been using, which is filled with Noodler's "54th Mass." bulletproof blue. I got the Lamy converter too, and will fill this pen tomorrow with the Noodler's I keep at work. Update: with the 54th Mass. ink, the pen writes a bit heavier lines than the Pilot fine point, but doesn't dry out in the nib the way the Pilot does.
I never used a fountain pen before this year, and am pleasantly surprised at what I've been missing. I started down this path when looking for an ink pen for note taking that would be truly "permanent" - i.e. stand up to industrial solvents, oils, as well as water. This was after losing a couple of pages of notes when some glycol spilled on them, even smearing and dissolving some Sharpie "permanent marker" marks I'd made. That led me to the Noodler's bulletproof inks, and thus to refillable fountain pens.
I've read a lot of reviews, which pointed me to the two pens mentioned here. Both work great, and write easily with very little to no pressure on the page, unlike ballpoint pens I'm used to. The Lamy EF point seems to produce the same line thickness as the Pilot Metropolitan Fine point, as expected from other reviewers - but only when I remember to use a light touch and not bear down like using a ballpoint. I like this Lamy pen a bit more than the Pilot Metropolitan, if only because of the pocket clip, which looks like it will stand up to being stuffed in and out of a thick work shirt or jacket pocket without bending or breaking (though the Pilot has held up well in/out of my wool jacket pocket over the last month. I also like the triangular grip section of the Lamy a bit more than the Metro, the cap area of the Metro digs into my fingers a bit when I grip it too tightly. But I also like the sleek look of the Pilot when it's capped, and its anodized aluminum finish. The Metro looks like it should be twice the cost of the Lamy but is actually about half the cost, which made me hesitate to buy it. Then I figured that I'm probably going to spend about a tenth of the cost of disposable pens before the $13 bottle of ink runs dry, and figure who cares about the initial cost of a few tens of dollars for either pen. I'll keep both, and maybe put red ink in one for marking up drawings.
Oh, and the Noodler's bulletproof ink is just what is says - I haven't found a solvent (water, oil, glycol, acetone, toluene, ethyl alcohol...) that smears it, once it has had a few minutes to dry.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025This is the most comfortable fountain-pen I have ever used. The extra fine nib makes me feel like my handwriting is actually legible. Who knew an extra-fine nib was the answer to all my problems? The barrel shape makes this super comfortable to hold.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018I may a bit premature in writing a rave review for this pen, but oh well! The LAMY was delivered an hour ago, and it was loaded up immediately. How do I love thee, LAMY? Let me count the ways:
1. The color is true red, not orangey as it appears on my computer.
2. the clip is nifty and useful.
3. Ink view window! (How thoughtful)
4. Ergonomic grip, which looks angular but doesn't feel that way.
5. Ink cartridge in blue is supplied. It only engages when the little cardboard ring around the barrel is removed and the sections of the pen are screwed together.
6. NO PROBLEM getting the ink to flow! Started up with one little tap of the nib.
7. Extra fine nib is truly extra fine.
8. Writing is velvety smooth, with exactly the right amount of feedback.
9. Ink flow is consistent over a full 8x11 page of writing small and compactly.
10. Has a modern "techie" look - which gives me a hoot, since I'm a 78 yo grandma!
11. Writes okay with the cap posted, though I prefer the balance without it...
Only downsides I can see are that 1. the pen uses proprietary cartridges and converters - Small deal, since the universal ones are often duds, and I'll bet the proprietary ones are not!, 2. the converter is not included and there is only one ink cartridge included. (I have a syringe to use to refill cartridges, so that's not a problem for me. I like changing ink colors often.) 3. The barrel of the pen somewhat lacks in elegance, since it is plastic. I bought the rose gold LAMY too, after trying this one, so that fixes that. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAV9LBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2016My wife and I love pens. I especially always loved fountain pens. I had bought a set of disposable Pilot Varsity fountain pens and liked them a lot. However, I wanted to get a refillable pen. So based upon a video I saw a youtube video from Goulet Pens (Brian's Top 5 Favorite Fountain Pens for Newbies- Ink Nouveau) I bought a Pilot Metropolitan - which my wife promptly absconded with. So, based upon the same video I decided to try the Lamy. The first Lamy I bought had a fine point. A little rougher than the Pilot but still nice. But, I needed something finer. I don't have the best handwriting and I am left handed. BTW - I find using fountain pens, as a lefty, to be preferable to than most other pens. Anyway, I digress. I really needed something that was a bit finer than the "fine" tip. So I bought this pen. It is really fine...pencil like. And I love it. I do lots of proofreading for my job and having the extra fine nib allows me to neatly squeeze in my notes. Since it is EF the smudge/smear factor of the ink is reduced (in my opinion/use).
Get a converter for the pen and good bottle of ink. You will appreciate the ability to 1) refill as needed (ink bottles typically will save your money at the cost of being a little messy and 2) colors - lots of colors to choose from..

AnujaReviewed in India on April 2, 20165.0 out of 5 stars This Pen Is Just Exquisite!
Just one complaint....the pen cap's grip could have been a little more firm...it seems kind of loose.
Else it is pure bliss to write with this pen. The way it glides smoothly on paper makes you feel like writing is an exquisite art (which it is, but this pen just doubly underlines that feeling!).
