Editorial Reviews

The wait is finally over! The Faroe Islands' Vikings deliver a masterpiece of true Viking Metal with their latest album "Land". Impressively combining powerful choruses and energetic guitar work with the traditional Folk melodies of their ancestors, TYR has composed a collection of hymns bound to shake the foundations of Midgard, topping them off with a unique musical rendition emphasized by a clear and powerful sound. "Land" is undoubtedly an album that will assure TYR's entry into Valhalla.

The Ltd. Edition version of Land comes housed in deluxe digipak format with a bonus DVD featuring TYR s Wacken Open Air set from 2006.

With all the depressing, angry, screeching metal bands out there, Tyr was a welcome surprise. All clean vocals, often in Faroese with multi-part harmonies, complement complex arrangements and folk-inspired jamming cranked up to 11. By all-clean I mean there's no screaming, growling, or any of that nonsense--nevertheless Heri Joensen's voice is powerful and inspired. These guys have real talent. Starting with "How Far to Asgard", which was good but not their best, they changed singers came out with "Eric the Red", followed by the great concept album "Ragnarok". So far all excellent albums all with the particular mix of pagan inspired lyrics, harmonious vocals and wild guitar work. "Land" is a cut above even these installments, and includes what may be the most epic viking metal song ever, the title cut "Land". Clocking in at 16 minutes or so, but never overstaying its welcome, "Land" actually combines folk melodies cranked up on metal with mythology-inspired lyrics and energetic hard rock. But there's more, in that frontman Heri Joensen is a thinking man's metallier; his songwriting goes one level deeper into the myths and shows a real grasp of the psychological resonance behind the great gods of the Norse. While unable to practice Asatru in the Faroes, as there are no groups in that small country, these guys are tru to the core, and they're great musicians as well. Joensen's classical training and love for traditional folk songs combines very well with his love of power chords and insane shredding--just check out the track "Rage of the Skull Gaffer" on the album Ragnarok to see what I mean. All around great band that refuses to leave my Go-List!

So, I have been waiting a while for this album to be released, and that time has finally come! And let me tell you, it was worth the wait! This album is great, the music flows perfectly throughout the album, and although it is an amazing album, it has one flaw for me... There are only 4 tracks on the entire album that have English vocals in them; Oceans, Brennivin, Land, and Hail to the Hammer. However Oceans is a 10 minute epic and Land is a 16 minute Epic, so, the total track time of the English songs takes up about the half the album anyways, which is what really won me over! Plus it comes with a live DVD with a great set list. So if you are a fan of Týr's previous records, I highly recommend this one. Also, the album art and design of the album are just awesome, my favorite Týr product yet. Congrats to another great album! All Hail Valhalla!!!

Tyr fourth studio album shows crearly that the band has a sound and a niche from which they will not stray out. The combination of metal and Nordic folk makes them a very unusual band and a true viking metal one. Although my preferred one is "Eric The Red" and this one lack at least one catchy song (like 'Valhalla' in "Ragnarok") is commendable the effort put in the music and the interesting fact that only the two long songs 'Ocean' and 'Land' are in English while the rest is all in Faroese, which to me is part of the appeal of the band.

My rating is based on the Amazon mp3 download version.

I downloaded this album the day it was available on Amazon. Upon listening, I found that the 5th song (and each song afterwards) was from a promotional recording. All of those songs have a voiceover that says something like, 'you are now listening to Tyr's album, Land'. The music fades out during these sections. The voiceover is done to discourage illegal downloading. Now it appears that it is being used by Amazon to discourage any downloading. I am now going to be extremely wary of purchasing downloads from Amazon. This needs to be fixed! When (not if) Amazon refunds my money, I will purchase the CD from another source.

Aside from that, the album itself is amazing. I have quickly grown to like the band quite a bit and recently saw them perform in Atlanta. I have listened to Land only once, thus far, but Tyr seems to have progressed in their songwriting, yet maintaining their distinctive sound. The song Land, in particular, is a standout. I highly recommend the album, but only the non-promotional copy version.

Tyr's CD/DVD combination is very interesting, since several of the songs are based on old Viking legends. Even though I don't speak Faroese (the dialect of Old Norse that they sing in) I know enough of the stories to follow along. Only two things disappointed me: first, the DVD of Regen Smithur (Regen the Smith) was from a live performance & not the one taped at a Viking battle reenactment, & second, (this is minor) the cover art is backwards! Viking ships ALWAYS had the rudder mounted on the right side of the hull, but they show it on the left.
