In the fall of 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected President. Soon after taking office in March of 1861, a battle is fought at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The dividing line is drawn, as eleven southern states secede from the Union, and the South becomes the Confederacy. The Underground Railroad comes to a halt, but Reuben, the oldest Hensley son, answers the call to go fight for the Union forces. A heartbreaking four year war follows as fellow countrymen take up arms against one another, resulting in mass casualties and destruction.

About the author

Beca Sue makes her home on an organic farm in Southern Indiana with her husband and many animals. She has three grown children and is anxiously awaiting grandchildren, whenever that may be. She owns a small farm/logging store, Crawford County Tractor Parts, in her hometown and can be found there most of the time. The fictitious general store in the Ohio River Valley Series has ironically became her life. Many of the characters in those books now seem to be among the loyal customers that frequent the store.

The negative is that it REALLY needs a good editor! Apparently it was originally written in the 1st person, and then mostly changed to 3rd person perspective. There are grammar and writing errors, and some sentences are badly enough written that you have to read them twice to figure what they mean. There are some events not clearly thought through. (For example, on July 4th, they go to visit a town and spend their time visiting all the shops. I'm pretty sure most of the shops would have been closed on July 4th.) And then the writing itself is ok but not great.
It was amazing to realize it took place in one county, and traveling was not easy.
Needs a thorough proofreading. Gets confusing at times.
