At the young age of 13, Virginia Hensley is told the family secret. For nearly five years the farm she loves and feels safe at has been a stop on the Underground Railroad. Virginia’s parents request that she help in the dangerous and illegal activity of transporting and hiding runaway slaves. Unforeseen situations arise, forcing the Hensley family to take risks that put the entire family in danger.
In the fall of 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected President. Soon after taking office in March of 1861, a battle is fought at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The dividing line is drawn, as eleven southern states secede from the Union, and the South becomes the Confederacy. The Underground Railroad comes to a halt, but Reuben, the oldest Hensley son, answers the call to go fight for the Union forces. A heartbreaking four year war follows as fellow countrymen take up arms against one another, resulting in mass casualties and destruction.

About the Author Beca Sue makes her home on an organic farm in Southern Indiana with her husband, daughter and son. She also has a grown son who makes his home in a neighboring county. She is a homemaker and enjoys helping out on the farm. Beca Sue began her career by writing Vacation Bible Schools and has completed six different VBS programs, many of which have been used by churches throughout the region. Beca Sue makes her home on an organic farm in Southern Indiana with her husband and many animals. She has three grown children and is anxiously awaiting grandchildren, whenever that may be. She owns a small farm/logging store, Crawford County Tractor Parts, in her hometown and can be found there most of the time. The fictitious general store in the Ohio River Valley Series has ironically became her life. Many of the characters in those books now seem to be among the loyal customers that frequent the store.

I downloaded this book and the sequel when they were free, and have been enjoying reading it. The story is quite good, and moves reasonably well. The author is good at explaining some of the history (and even the meanings of some words) within the framework of the story. The people in the story are Christians; the religious side is clear but not overwhelming, and neither the history nor the religion is overdone. The protagonist is a likeable character. I will definitely read the sequel.
The negative is that it REALLY needs a good editor! Apparently it was originally written in the 1st person, and then mostly changed to 3rd person perspective. There are grammar and writing errors, and some sentences are badly enough written that you have to read them twice to figure what they mean. There are some events not clearly thought through. (For example, on July 4th, they go to visit a town and spend their time visiting all the shops. I'm pretty sure most of the shops would have been closed on July 4th.) And then the writing itself is ok but not great.

I enjoyed the book. Thought it offered great insights into life in the North during the Civil War. I became frustrated trying to figure out the location. I even checked maps of the Underground Railroad trying to pin down the info, which I didn't find in the book until about Page 130, where it said Southern Indiana. There are a lot of editing errors, occasional words omitted, and confusion of names. Soldiers' last names listed as "Weathers" and, later in the paragraph as "Tomes." "Tomes" is shown later in the book to another character. The voice of the narrative changes from first person to third person, sometimes in the same sentence. In spite of these distractions, I found the characters and the story captivating and I've just purchased book two i the series, "Just As I Am."

It would seem that the author initially wrote the book in the first person voice, then changed the narrative to the third person. Unfortunately a high number of instances occur where the original voice suddenly appears, and the reader is faced with inconsistent conflicts between first and third person narrative voice even in the same sentence. Too many occurrences to be passed over - I stopped counting at twenty.

Beca Sue depicts Virginia, her two brothers, mother and father living on a farm outside a small southern Indiana town during the Civil War era in a very descriptive way. Little did Virginia know that her family was involved in illegal activity that she would also have to become a part of. The General Store, owned by Virginia's father, is the small town of Marengo's center of activity whether for a game checkers, place to hang out, news about the war, or to gather friends and relatives for a pot luck. Friends and families helped each other through the tragedies of war and celebrated together during happier times. I thoroughly enjoyed Beca Sue's account of small town life during that era. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Great way to remember history

The characters were so real, I kept thinking it was someone's journal. Sometimes current times popped in, it rarely.
It was amazing to realize it took place in one county, and traveling was not easy.
Needs a thorough proofreading. Gets confusing at times.
