But when one victim’s family threatens to expose Ford’s own dark secret, the ticking clock becomes a time bomb.

Still consumed by guilt over his part in his wife’s tragic accident and struggling to raise the teenage son he lied to, Ford now finds himself losing control of the investigation. Can he work with Hannah to solve the case while privately fighting off the attempted blackmail? Or have his demons finally caught up with him?

Land Rites was a pleasure to read. The characters of DI Ford and his son, Sam, as well as the other people introduced in Shallow Ground, are fleshed out in Book 2 and became more real to me. The story was captivating and with the many twists and turns kept me guessing until the end. I am looking forward to Book 3, Plain Dead, and the answers to more questions about DI Ford’s past and the death of his wife.

In addition to a great story, I appreciate the sense of humor Andy demonstrates in some of his sentences. For example, “JJ steamed through the crowd, a suited-and-booted Moses parting a black sea.” And another, “Two dropped their weapons, the third made a run for it. He got ten yards, thirty stitches, and fifteen years.”

When a second body is found several miles away, Ford must figure out if they are connected; and if they are, how? While investigating, Ford finds information that there is a leak in his department. This leak is feeding information to the family of one of the victims, and this family is threatining Ford to find the guilty party, or Sam, Fords son, could pay the price. This family member also implies he knows information about Ford's past that he will use if necessary. Can Ford and his team overcome obstacles and mis-information and find the killer or killers?

Dismembered parts of a corpse are found by a dog on a walk in a field. Then while a homicide investigation is launched another corpse is found. Or they connected? Detective Ford, the lead investigator thinks so. The first victim a well known local thug, part of a crime family. The second an environmental activist. Both bodies are found in on private property. Trespassers. What ensues is a web of of misdirection, deceit, blackmail. This is an extremely well written whodunnit mystery!! Enjoyed immensely!!

Welcome back Henry Ford, the follow up to ‘Shallow Ground’ proves even more intriguing and challenging than his previous case.
Not only does Andy deliver a well paced wonderfully convoluted plot, it is set against a gallery of well rounded characters covering both his burgeoning relationship with Hannah, to his more confrontational interaction with the local ‘mafia’ family.
As always Andy has done his research and the police procedure feels really authentic even down to a detectives need to complete stifling routine paperwork, this for me adds real colour and adds rather than detracting from a compelling story that engages the reader from page 1.
If you have enjoyed Stella Cole and Gabriel Wolfe stories you will really enjoy this Henry Ford.

Wow what a brilliant follow up book to shallow ground.
This story has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster.
Who would have thought a pleasant stroll across the beautiful Salisbury countryside with your faithful four legged friend, could result in a murder investigation but that’s exactly what happens in this book and you’ve guessed it, DI Ford is brought in to head the investigation and what an investigation it is.
What started out as a murder investigation of a low life poacher/petty criminal of a local notorious crime family, soon turns into a double murder investigation, when the body of a eco-activist is found following a heavy rain storm and what makes matters even worse is that both bodies are found on land near the ancestral home of a Lord and his family.
And so begins a race against time for DI Ford as he tries to solve the case before the older brothers of the petty criminal take matters into their own hands.
Not only does Ford have to fight to keep control of a investigation in which he has to try and work out the connection between the two dead bodies and why were they killed and by whom, whilst trying to best please his bosses by not treading on the toes of his lordship plus he’s also having to deal with the fact that one of the family’s, is trying to blackmail him by threatening to expose a dark secret from his past, that he thought no one, including his own son knew about and at the same time he also learns that there’s a rat within is team, who as being leaking evidence from the case to help aid certain people with an hidden agenda but who is the rat?
Nothing in this case is as straightforward as it seems.
There are plenty of questions asked within this story, like are the murders connected or not?
Why were they killed?
And who committed the murders, was it someone connected to his lordship or maybe someone from the criminal fraternity?
But the biggest question of all is can DI Ford with the help of Dr Hannah Fellowes solve this case before time runs and someone carry’s out their own type of justice, while all the time fighting his own personal demons.
Will you work out the answers to these questions and solve the case before Ford?
The only way to find out is to buy the book.

Ps - take my advice and buy shallow ground as well and read it first, you won’t be disappointed and when you’ve read both, why not try some of Andy’s other collection of books, they’re all brilliant reads as well.

DI Ford gets involved with a local murder or two. One murder entangles Ford with the local wannabe gangsters and put Sam in a dangerous position. Wix decides to make her own investigations in to why Henry will not get involved with anyone in a relationship and also decides it’s safe for Sam to go mountaineering! Who would think a walk in the countryside could uncover not one but two murders...... The Lord of the Manor does not think he should be investigated, but should he? Another excellent book in this series, the characters are so alive, it’s amazing to think this is only the second book in the series, an amazing book and well worth the read!

I really enjoyed this book, after ordering it last year and waiting months for it to arrive. The first Detective Ford book was good, and I found it hard to put down. This second installment is z step up, and I've spent many happy hours over a long weekend reading it. Detective Ford comes across as a credible, hard working copper with an instinct for rooting out crime. Andy Maslen writes well, unfolding the plot with tantalising glimpses of more to come. This series is by far my favourite Maslen character (and I have read all of his books to date) and I am already looking forward to book 3. Hopefully not to long to wait.
