This fictionalized book is the biblical account of "the woman with the issue of blood" found in the gospels. In the opening chapter I was transported back in time to a hillside in Jerusalem where I first meet Elianna, a beautiful young girl, the daughter of a weaver of fine linen and wool, betrothed to Ethan. She's full of all the hopes and dreams a sixteen year old's heart can hold. By the end of the chapter, I joined Eilanna in tears at the shattering of all those hopes and dreams. So begins her journey and mine as well. I experienced all the anguish, pain and hurt right along with her. Such is Afshar's talent, her ability to draw me in and have me walk side by side with Eilanna through life's trials.
Her betrothed Ethan, is a man of integrity and character, both admirable and loyal in his love for Eilanna. I love the way he loved her, giving her leeway in her work while being firm with her when need be. Their love is forced to endure many hardships. Their difficult choices beyond comprehension at times, sacrificial and selfless. When I thought Eilanna could endure no more (and me as well), the scriptures that began each chapter provides a comforting and stabilizing force.
As Eilanna chose to live out the scriptures, they became not only her strength, but the beginning of her healing. She learned to put her whole trust in God, the freedom found in forgiveness and one of the hardest things of all, to love her enemies. Her experiences challenged me to examine my own spiritual walk, always a sobering thing to do.
The Land of Silence is an extraordinary love story, beautiful in description, piercing in it's conviction and ultimately a call to any and all to touch the hem of His garment and be made whole. It's so much more than an excellent work of fiction, it's an eye-opening experience to abandon fear, even if out of desperation and put your trust in God's love. By the end of the story I was yet again in tears, but they were happy tears based on the miraculous works of God. Words fail me in my attempt to explain the transforming revelation to be found in the pages of Land of Silence, but nonetheless, I encourage everyone to read it, highly recommend it, counting it among my all time top favorite books.
Tyndale House has published a truly outstanding book, I thank them and author Tessa Afshar for the privilege of reading it.
Tessa Afshar YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!!!!!
I stayed up in the wee hours of the morning because I could not put Land of Silence down. I said I was just going to read a bit of chapter one...I could not stop. BY FAR my favorite Christian Novelist....she never disappoints. The story of Elianna grabs your heart literally from page one and transport you to her day and time instantly. I won't give anything away I will just say it is a MUST READ! Tessa, I pray you are working on the next best seller.....I can't wait.
