Best-Selling Author Yessi Smith calls the characters of La La Land, "Beautifully flawed."
"Liza and Thomas Ripley Hatter find themselves on a path to destruction, yet they desire to fight against the oppressive systems to take back what is theirs. Love. Hate. Jealousy. Forgiveness. You once knew the city of Anthem...well, see how like the new La La Land where nothing is as it seems." The Book Herald
"I was lucky enough to beta read this book, and my review in a word is EXCITING! I love the way the first GoA book weaves into this one, and if you liked GoA you won't be disappointed in the story arc of the characters in La La Land! The lives of the main characters are carried forward as the world falls apart around them, and I loved the development of Liza and Tommy and how they struggle to understand their pasts, what's happening in the world, and how they fit into it. There are some heartbreaking moments of loss along the way, and some real surprise twists and turns. They were written so well that I didn't see them coming, but at the same time make perfect sense. The introduction of new characters adds a deeper dimension of love, friendship, balanced with terror and loss. It's a fine line to walk, but the balance between hope and fear/suspense is very well done." Amy Bartelloni Best Selling Author
"I love the poetic style of Keys' writing, and I have since reading book one, "The Last City," (back when it was tilted "Gods of Anthem"). Both poetry and horror roots blossom in Keys' narrative, giving her words a unique place in the oversaturated YA world. Book two shows definite growth for Keys as a writer, right alongside her characters, which aren't quite finished with their journey yet.
This wonderful story is sprinkled with unexpected plot twists, plenty of "aww" moments, tons of hold-your-breath action, and even a handful of "wtf?!" moments. This story is honest, raw--even in the sad parts--unapologetic in that regard, and I admire the realness. Keys' ability to capture the beauty in the sadness and loss of those loved is something that makes her stand apart from the rest.
I could see these characters so clearly, and hear their voices in my mind (especially Dallas--I'm from Dallas, so she really leapt off the page at me), which shows how well these characters are written.
With a definite 'chill' and 'creep' factor,' I'd recommend this series for older teens and up, and for anyone who enjoys scary stories about: monsters, zombies, vampires, battling Authority, or fighting a dark world through the light of love." With little humanity left in this dying world, Keys manages to keep hope alive in the hearts' of her readers. The characters' stories weave together, bringing us closer to them and their journey. La La Land is full of heart stopping suspense with an underlying of courage that can't go unnoticed.
The writing was beautiful and poetic and I can't wait to be devoured by the third book in this series.
