"Land Without Evil" by Matthew Pallamary introduces us to the Guarani people of South America during the late 1700's. This is not a new story in general as we all know many civilizations were subjected to the invasion of Europe in earlier times. However, the story itself is intriguing and pulls you in almost from the first words. You can tell that Matthew Pallamary put a lot of research into this book. It shows in the way this novel is crafted together. A stunning tapestry of history, fiction, love and a kiss of magic. If you cannot help but smell the heavy scent of the land that the Guarani people inhabit, then your reading it wrong.

Ava-Tape is a shaman in training with his people but he is more than just a standard shaman within his people. Ava-Tape was taught by the missionaries that came to his people's land and learned about worshiping a Jesuit God, but like many just learning the ways of such a God he cannot wrap his head around why this God does not speak directly to the people who worship him. I was truly drawn into the book at every stage in the book. I felt for the journey that the people took and I appreciate the loving touch that Matthew Pallamary gave the book. As someone who reads a lot of war and similar kind of books I did feel that those scenes could have had a little more to them; however, that wish does not take away from the overall feel of the book. I would recommend this to anyone who loves historical fiction and fantasy too.
