The author of this book must be a wonderful person to know. You can tell, just from the way she writes. She describes all of these surprising adventures and misadventures in a way that delights. She makes no judgements, doesn't over-describe, and
lets the reader have the same reactions to events that she and her family had.
And, there is page after page of events that were most surprising, most unlike anything she or we had experienced, and she
takes us right along with her on this journey.

We get to know the wonderful characters in her new world, shake our heads in amazement and amusement at their ways, and
come home with so many colorful memories.

We have taken a Punjab Sojourn with Jean Harlan and have learned so much and loved every minute.

What an experience this must have been for a woman coming from a college campus in Ohio with four children from 3 to 11 to find herself in the midst of poverty and a completely new culture! The author apparently relies on notes and letters from the time to compile this thorough and often poignant description of the family's life, but she brings a delightful touch to her story and makes one wonder, could I have done that? I felt as though I were there with her, rushing to crowded trains with numerous pieces of baggage, dealing with beggars and servants, biking to her teaching job (how could she have managed that with all the rest is beyond imagining!) With her warmth and humor, you also get a glimmer of the conflicts and problems of a newly emerging independent nation. Well done!

It is 1962 and you are a stay-at-home mother with four children under 10 and an academic husband who suddenly gets a Fulbright to India in 1962. There is a flurry of packing to leave Ohio in five weeks, the novelty of the ocean voyage, arduous travel to the university town in the Punjab, and then settling into a life of constant surprise. Feeding the children properly with strange foods and dubious public health standards is a huge challenge, as is their schooling. Having lots of domestic help seems promising but every task takes at least three people who often come on different days--India's way of handling underemployment. But you find "fascination and welcome in a new culture'" and are deeply delighted with all there is to learn and savor. The experience is transformative. And many years later as you write this book, you credit the Fulbright Program for its intergenerational impact: the children and their children are remarkably internationally-minded, with Peace Corps and international study stints.
Harlan's sense of adventure and appreciation is contagious. This is a very enjoyable book.
