Eye opener

This is a very important book, showing places in London that most people never see,. Mostly they are ordinary places becoming extraordinary because of the story attached to it and because the photographer eyes managed to elevate them for us to see. As a result, he also elevates our level of awareness and compassion. It makes one think of other realities. Artistically done with splash of yellow, red, dark blue, and elegantly published this book is one of the most interesting photography albums that were published in 2013. And I've seen many.

This is a record of unsensational tragedy. Each photograph is the scene of a murder (every murder within the M25 area over a 2-year period); very few made headlines and those that did soon disappeared from public view. Here we see the scenes soon after the event - some still with scene-of-crime work still under way.

This is the most interesting new set of photographs I've seen for a while. I love picturesque landscapes, and I'm affected by striking news images. But there's a stillness and depth to many of the images that's very affecting. One can't help wondering about the people - not just the victims and their killers, but the neighbours, friends, family, passers-by. There's nothing extraordinary about any of these locations - except the killing. There's nothing extraordinary about any of the people in the pictures - except their connection to the murder. And it's the very ordinariness that gives these images their power to make one stop for a moment (or longer).

An absorbing book - highly recommended.
