Laney Cub 12R Combo Amplifier
12" Tube Amplifier with Reverb
The Cub12R tube guitar combo delivers 15 watts of pure tube tone from a pair of EL84 power tubes into its 12" custom HH speaker. Reverb is also included.
The Laney Story
Laney Amplification began in 1967 when Lyndon Laney, whilst playing in a local band, 'The Band of Joy' with John Bonham on drums and Robert Plant on vocals, turned his musical interest into amplifier construction. Initially working in his father’s garage. Lyndon Laney sought to design and build amplifiers with key 'tonal' characteristics that were unheard of at the time. Formed in 1967 by Lyndon Laney, Laney Amplification is a West Midlands based guitar and musical instrument amplifier manufacturer who were closely involved with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath in the birth of the ‘Heavy Metal’ music genre. Since 1967, Laney Amplification has gone on from strength to strength and is now a multinational company that continues to design ‘tone’ solutions to enable musicians of all playing styles and levels to attain their ‘tonal’ ecstasy. Laney work with globally renowned musicians and bands such as The Prodigy, Killswitch Engage, Skindred, Black Sabbath and many more. Their design archive collection spans the music decades.
The Cub12R houses a 12″ HH driver: HH have custom-designed the driver exclusively for Laney giving the perfect loudspeaker pairing to the amplifier.
Classic British Amplifier Design
Designed and engineered in Great Britain, the Cub12R delivers 15 watts power and tone via a pair of EL84 power tubes. In addition a less than 1 watt power option can be used, giving the same power tube tone at lower volume levels. Coupled with 3 x ECC83 pre-amp tubes the Cub12R goes from warm cleans to rich crunch giving the classic tones you need.
For an expanded rig the Cub12R can also be hooked up to a larger cabinet via its extension out socket. Try a 2×12 or even 4×12 cabinet and be prepared to be blown away.
Reverb On Board
A rich-sounding reverb adds ambiance to the classic tone from the Cub12R. An FS1 footswitch can also be used to switch reverb remotely.
Your favorite effects pedals can be connected via the FX loop putting the Cub12R at the heart of your rig.
Small is Beautiful
The Cub series delivers pure, vintage tube tone in small format, lower wattage units providing classic vintage sounds without complicated control layouts or excessive volume levels.

The CUB 12R has more roar, substantially bigger bites and a nifty trick up their sleeves! The CUB 12R has increased volume and full rich valve tone. Looking at the pre amp it's clear it packs more into the amp than its smaller siblings. The output section of the CUB12R is based around a pair of EL84 tubes giving it a more scooped tone than it's smaller counterparts. Think smooth rich overdrive with bags of gain. Now for the nifty trick - the CUB 12R features two input sockets one labelled 15 watts the other labelled <1 watt. Plug into the 15 watts input and that's what you get 15 watts RMS of cool tube tone, plug into the <1 watt (less than one watt) and you get your great tube tone but now it's a whisper more than a roar. The <1 watt option allows you to drive the power amp section really hard alllowing you to really access the Dark Art Tone of power amp distortion.

The amp looks good. Only nit the corners are cheap plastic caps, one came with a crack in it. I knew I wouldn't have been happy with the looks of the monoprice knock off, even at 1/2 the price (I heard an earlier version of that amp and it was quite good, not sure about more recent revisions with the front mounted controls).
You can get good distortion sounds at reasonable volumes because it has both drive and volume, along with the 1 watt input (which is still plenty loud if you want, easily keeps up with a live drummer in practice.) This makes it so much more flexible than an amp that only has one volume (e.g. Fender Pro Junior, Supro amps) assuming you want something compact and all-in-one.
It is very lightweight which is very very nice. The built is speaker is pretty decent and lightweight. I wanted a little more bottom, so I put in a Jensen Electric Lightning 16 OHM (the existing speaker is 8 OHMS, but I didn't have that in 12", still works) and it works great. That speaker weighs probably more than the previous amp and speaker put together! So not super light anymore, but easily carried one handed (in D&D terms, a Strength of 5 is required). I will stress that the built in speaker is plenty good, and this is mostly a pet vanity project replacing the speaker. I found the tilt on the bottom of the cabinet when I was replacing the speaker as a happy accident :) You need a 5/16" socket driver to replace the speaker for the 4 nuts that hold it on, plus a phillips screw driver of course.
I am not crazy about the reverb, which is adequate. I'm glad it has it. It isn't as good as the digital reverb on my Night Train combo (which is really quite excellent), and isn't like the spring reverb on my Supro Saturn, just to illustrate what I think 2 excellent reverbs are.
A nice touch is the velcro power cord strap in the back which is really handy for an amp. I need to put this amp away after every practice, and this feature makes me wonder why nobody else does this.
I wish the foot switch controlled something more useful than the reverb, for example more drive or the effects loop.
This is a solid buy at this price point. It's good quality, good features, looks legit, and not so expensive I have to baby it. There are so many similar options in the 12" 15 watt combos, this is a solid choice.
The first thing to note is the price. After looking at the competition it was clear that the Cub 12r had a lot to offer for the price. Of course the Cub is not hand wired/made, but made in china. This is something you have to accept when you're in this price range.
Secondly the tone of this amp is amazing. There is plenty of clean headroom (with zero gain you can turn the volume up the whole way and stay clean), and the overdrive is great.
The < 1 watt input (.75 watts accomplished with power scaling circuitry) is a GREAT feature. You can plug into the < 1 watt input and get great sounding power tube overdrive when turned up, while still remaining at bedroom volumes.
At 15 watts this amp is still capable of playing small gigs (mic recommended).
I would recommend this amp to anyone who is looking for a tube amp with great tone that doesn't want to break the bank.
Very solid construction.
Sounds like it's about 5 times bigger!
Super clean sound and great smooth overdrive.
Very cool little amp!
