The English -> Russian has IPA transcriptions of English words! Stress markings too!
Russian -> English has no IPA transcriptions but that's fine, Russian has a pretty phonetic alphabet. Stress and stress shifts are marked and noted though. Each word has genders as well, and irregular plurals are also noted.
The back has verb conjugations! And noun/adjective/pronoun/numeral declensions, which is honestly awesome. I think it's a good sign that it all looks familiar to me and I understand it.
As a linguistics major, I'm just very excited about all the linguistic knowledge that was clearly put in to this book. I'm almost excited to use this dictionary on my final, strange as that is to say.
The cover is 4 by 6 inches and the thickness is 1 inch, so calling it a pocket dictionary may be a stretch. I have a Sanseido English-Japanese dictionary containing 1000 pages that measures 2.5 by 4.25 by 0.75 inches; now that's what I call a pocket dictionary!
The back cover of the Langenscheidt says that it contains about 45,000 references. Technically that may be correct but the primary listings are about 10,000 words from Russian to English and 10,000 more from English to Russian. Therefore this is not a comprehensive dictionary (how could it be?) but it contains most of the words that I would ever want to look up. A useful feature is that Russian verbs are numbered from 1 to 28 to identify their conjugation pattern as described in the Appendix. A similar system is used to specify the declensions of nouns and adjectives.
Langenscheidt pocket dictionaries travel well due to their size (about the dimensions of two moleskin notebooks), sturdy vinyl covers, and comprehensive word selection. You can't go wrong with these dictionaries.
