As with most books with a first person narrative, it is important that the main character be interesting and unique. As a character, I found Grace relatable and believable. She's a self-aware introspective young woman and I empathized with her struggles to find answers to her questions about faith and spirituality. I loved how caring she was to her Mom and her sister, Butch. I understood her fears about life after death and I was moved by her persistent need to get answers. We're also introduced to her friends: Neng, Seth, Ting, and Ben. These characters felt lived in, and although we weren't privy to their thoughts, the writer gave us enough background on each to understand their motivations.
Although the book discusses weighty subjects, there are enough light and funny moments thrown in to balance it out. Grace's journey to discovering her faith felt natural; the conflicts and resolutions that drove the story forward were also organic. The book will make you think, question, and reflect. I recommend that this book be read with friends (book clubs! :)) and family; the discussion afterwards would surely be lively and lead you to better appreciate the book's message. Go forth and spread the word!
