Throughout the book you see the author pitting the two very different cultures one against the other. How in the twist of life, she seem to enjoy for freedom and comforts in her old oppressing communist country than in her new country land of the free. The book is riveting, fresh keeps and you enthralled at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. From the title a " China love story: …” you form an opinion that this is about two people who fall in love and a promise of great things in America turns into a night mare as plans begin to unravel even before they arrive in Michigan by an unexpected terrorist attack on the us on 9/11. From that day forward things don't pan out as planned with a surprising twist at every page. As Paul takes ill you cannot be certain of anyone's motives since there is so much deceit and treachery in this small town of Lansing Michigan. Yet, as everyone's true intentions get revealed, you feel the pain and surprise along with the heroine Yasei, Paul's wife whose character only blossoms in the midst of adversity. Her warrior personality (feeling persecuted she escapes her home through a “dark forest dressed in camo and carrying a big duffel bag on her shoulder with an oversize coat and boots”). Optimism shines through despite every unkind act committed against her even when all cards seem stacked against her. The fact that she is only 100 pound dainty Chinese woman makes her seem more remarkable especially when she finally confronts her arch enemy Reginal and his whole entourage of “yes” men who make a mockery of justice creating a virtual circus in the courtroom. These men have only one thing on their mind, which is destroying her and cheating her out of her husband's fortune.
This is in essence a "battle of wills," to the bitter end in and out of court, as it is often referred by John, Yasei 's attorney – The battle quickly escalates to a war. A “will” to fight to the end is inevitable between two formidable forces on the one hand Reginald and Posey vs. the underdogs John, Bondo (Yasei 's only true friend) and of course Yasei herself. Who will win no one knows? The end will surprise you as it did me.
Written well enough to be a work of mystery and romantic fiction, The Lansing Tower is the tale of two people who find each other in China during the United States no-fly zone following the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The story is told by a friend of the main characters – James Bondo who gets caught in a web meant of tragedy all his own after meeting Yasei – the young woman from China.
Yasei has come to the United States with her new lover, Paul following the death of her husband in China. They are harassed in the States by those from China who want to claim her dead husband’s fortune and arrange a gun heist as well as destroying Yasei in the process.
Bondo gets caught in the web when his business is destroyed by the faulty ignition in a General Motors vehicle in 2002 and unexpected issues overtake him. The protagonists include local lawyers, city lawyers, family members, and even local trouble makers. There are probate, civil, immigration and criminal issues that all three characters end up involved in.
If you love a good romantic adventure than this non-fiction work is for you! Pick up a copy and enjoy not only how well written this book is, but how important its message of tenacity and love is.
