First Ill have to say I purchased this to replace a old lansky kit ive been using since I was a kid. I had it many years and used it tons, loved it. Worked great. When i got this kit i noticed the cheap flimsy box. Not like the red one in the picture or like the old one i had. Next problem was the system its self is garbage compared to the old model. This thing has 2 thumb screws instead of a thumb screw and a phillips like what was pictured. That wouldn't be a problem except it completely blocks the use to the 17 and 20 degree cutting angles. The stone will rub on the big red thumb screw no matter what angle or technique you try. Next is the little rubber pads in the knife clamp. This is a good idea. My old lansky kit did not have this and if you didn't take your tang it would leave a mark. So these little rubber pads would have been a improvement IF they didn't use cheap glue to hold them to the aluminum. When i received my kit one of them was completely off and laying the plastic case and the other was stuck on by a corner. Also supplied is a long flat head screw i assume is to replace the top thumb screw but if you put that in it will stick out 1/2 inch out the other side making sharpening at any angle impossible. One of the biggest advantages with the Lansky compared to the Spyderco is that this Lansky includes a coarse hone which allows you to reprofile knives to a different edge angle, which is something I couldn't do on the Spyderco. Also, I've been able to sharpen many kinds of steel with this Lansky: Aus8, 154CM, VG-10, etc. The other good thing about the Lansky is that it's a modular system, so you can buy additional hones to match your needs. For instance, I bought an Ultra fine sharpening hone that actually allowed me to put a fine edge on the blade. Just with the three ones provided you can't get a fine edge. The tool box even has room for two extra hones, so when you get them you can just put them in and they fit. So the Lansky works well, but it has a few downsides: - you can only sharpen small blades with this tool. You could technically sharpen bigger ones but it would be such a pain that it would be basically not doable. When I say small I don't mean just the length, but also how large a blade is. - One of the screws used to tighten the knife holding tool gets in the way when trying to do finer angles. It's the screw without the red cap. Some people fixed this by replacing the screw with one with a hex head, but this is clearly a design flaw. - the knife holding tool doesn't have anything to secure it to, say a table or a bench. So, it's not overly comfortable to use. I still feel like those flaws don't detract too much from the functionality of the sharpening tool, and the Hines are pretty good quality, so ultimately, I'm not unhappy about this sharpener and I'm able to sharpen all my small folding and ECD knives. For those who care: the patent expired on the Edge Pro, and this system is not a direct ripoff either way. This system is all metal, which is a huge bonus after reviews about metal+plastic systems stripping out easily. However, this is a cheaply manufactured system. At the very least I recommend doing the following: 1: file off sharp edges, especially the unfinished bottoms of the device. 2: pad all surfaced that will contact the knife--in my pics you will see electrical tape: it works fine. Also be aware: you will need to clean stone slurry and metal shavings as you go to avoid scratching your knife. This is common for any system that clamps the knife in place, so no big deal. 3: either get an angle cube, or some way to check and measure relative angles. This device has No markings for angles (and a little experience will show why: not every knife will he the same size or clamp in the same place, the angles will change with every setup. Markings would not help.) I recommend marking the edge with a marker, take a few swipes with the stone and compare the wear to the marker stripe: adjust angle until all marker is removed evenly. Once you have this, check the angle of the stone as it lays on the blade and note it. ANYTIME YOU MOVE THE KNIFE, OR CHANGE STONES, VERIFY THE ANGLE AGAIN. I made a bit more work for myself by flipping a knife, changing stones and eyeballing it. Read more Read more	Razor sharp knives with little skill - some tips to help you decide which version (1,2,3,4) to get By Aaron I on February 11, 2015 Verified Purchase The point of a sharpener is to get your knives razor sharp with little effort or skill, and this product delivers. It'll take you about half an hour and a test knife to figure the technique out, and then you'll be able to sharpen anything razor sharp. So all in all, this is an excellent product and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Once you're proficient, it takes about 5 minutes to sharpen a knife which is dull but otherwise in good state, and maybe 20 for one which has been chipped or has a rounded or otherwise unsuitable profile (e.g. from bad hand sharpening), or to completely reprofile a knife. I have used it on various kitchen knives (from small 7 cm / 3" paring knives to 25 cm / 10" chef knives), "tactical"-style folding knives, and even the blade of a spokeshave (a tool similar to a wood plane). The knives were carbon steel, stainless steel, and in various conditions from "chipped and dull like a a butterknife" to "already pretty sharp". The longest I spent was on the spokeshave blade which was chipped and dull and took about 20 minutes until razor sharp. If you are not sure which version to get (1, 2, 3 or 4), here's a list of what's included in the Apex 4 kit and what it's useful for: - Obviously the tool itself, a bag and some knick-knacks which come with every version. - 120 stone - extremely useful if you want to remove metal, e.g. to reprofile or remove chipping. I highly recommend this. I suppose you could also do this with the 220 but it would take a little longer. - 220 stone - MUST HAVE - great stone for a first pass on a knife which has been neglected for a while but without major damage. - 400 stone - I have never used it since it's so close to the 600. Pretty much useless if you ask me. I suppose it would be useful if you didn't have the 600 stone. - 600 stone - MUST HAVE - this is the stone which gets your knife sharp. And I mean very sharp. Good enough for any practical use - anything beyond this is only to please yourself, not for practicality. If you don't care about ultimate razor sharpness, you can stop right here. It's quick if you did a good job with the 220 - maybe 5 passes on each side. - 1000 stone - gets your stuff razor sharp. Razor sharp meaning literally as sharp as a razor blade, presuming that you are sharpening a high quality knife. The edge starts to shine and seem almost polished (not quite mirror finish). If you don't care about that and just want your knives to be "more than sharp enough for any practical use" vs "razor sharp", you don't need this. - 2000 polishing tape - never used since the 3000 is finer and works quickly. - 3000 polishing tape - this is basically for cosmetics. I can't tell the difference in sharpness between the 1000 stone and this, but this gives the edge mirror finish. Literally mirror finish, you can see reflections in it. It's very quick to do after the 1000 stone (2-3 passes on each side), so I don't think that the 2000 polishing tape is really useful. - ceramic rod - the instructions say to use this to "remove the burr". I never had any burring after going over a knife with the 1000 or 3000, so I'm not sure this is really needed. I tried it once anyway after the 1000 stone, and I had the impression that it actually made the knife less sharp. It has a weird curved handle which I don't like. It feels like it would break easily if dropped. I could do without this. Now after all the good things, here's the (mildly) bad: The reach of the tool is limited, so you'll have to move knives with long blades (more than about 6") from side to side to get to all of the blade. This makes it a little more difficult to hold the angle consistent. Since the support is pretty narrow, it's also tricky to sharpen knives with thin/flexible blades because they bend a little under pressure. I don't understand why it doesn't come with some sort of clamping mechanism to hold the blade. Holding the knife still with one hand while sharpening with the other is trickier than you think, even though there is a support for the knife. It also means that you have to switch hands when sharpening the other side of the blade - it's surprisingly difficult to be consistent across hands. I think I might modify or extend the sharpener with a clamp at some point - I'll update this review once I have a working system. If you want to reprofile a knife and give it a known angle (e.g. you say "i want to give this knife a 20 degree edge"), you'll need an extra tool or something for an accurate angle measurement. It's very easy to set the tool to "the same angle the knife already has", but you can't set it precisely to a known angle. I don't care about this so I don't know what the best way to do that is. But again, these are all minor complaints. As a whole, this is a fantastic sharpening system and will allow you to get literally razor edges with little effort or skill. Great Idea, too bad it doesn't work.

I've been sharpening my own knives with a whet stone since I was a kid and have no trouble keeping a razor edge on my knives this way. But it's time consuming, so I was very much looking forward to receiving this because I thought it was going to handle the geometry of the process and make sharpening quicker. I couldn't have been more disappointed. For starters the clamp that came with my set had rubber inserts at the end where the knife goes. I'm sure the intention here was to better secure the knife while preventing scratching of the blade but the actual result of this is that it's impossible to get the clamp tight enough to prevent the knife from moving. Not only does the knife move back and forth in the clamp, it tilts down slightly as soon as you place the stone on the blade. Even the slightest tilt completely ruins the angle on the blade. The whole point of this system vs crock sticks or just a standard stone is that the angles are supposed to be perfect thanks to the guide rods. Well once that blade tilts even the slightest amount, that is lost. I've also noticed that on thinner blades, such as filet knives, when putting the stone on the blade they tend to bow at the ends, away from the clamp. Again, this changes the angle closer to the handle and top of the blades where it bows versus the middle of the blade where the clamp holds it more firmly.
I've gone back to these this kit several times just to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong or hoping maybe it just takes practice, but every time I end up back on my whet stones doing the job the old fashioned way.

less expensive than a new set of knives

I thought I was all cool sharpening my kitchen knives with a plain old stone. The first couple goes yielded good results, but eventually I came to understand that I had completely destroyed the bevel on my knives. I did not grow up on a farm (like everyone else here, apparently) and so I seem to have no ability to hold a consistent angle while using a stone. As a result I ended up rounding off the bevel on the knives over time.

I bought this kit as a last-ditch attempt to save the knives. As such, I wasn't worried about ruining them and was free to following the instructions on the video and experiment as I attempted to cut a new bevel on the knives. I am happy to report that I was successful at creating very nice edges on the blades. Even on the 8" chef I simply mounted the clamp in the middle of the blade. I would guess that the angle of the bevel is "wrong" at the tip and near the handle as a result, but it's still 1000x better than what I was doing, and as long as I'm consistent with clamp placement I should be able to maintain that edge.

I added a ceramic ultra fine hone to the kit. In the short term I probably would have been better off with the extra coarse to help me cut the new bevels faster, but in the long run I hope I'll get more use out of the ultra fine hone. Finishing with the ceramic is very satisfying and gives the edge a nicely polished shine.

The bit about using oil to clean the hones by "floating" the metal out of the pores was a revelation for me, and certainly seems to work. Clean regularly if you're cutting a new bevel, it'll save you a lot of wasted effort.

Probably a well known trick, but while experimenting I found that using an overhead light was the best way to know if I was making progress on the coarse cut. After a few passes you get a new glint for the beginning of the repaired bezel. If you tip the knife farther away from the light you'll pick up other glints for previous bezels, or even a sustained glint for a rounded bezel. Keep going until that's gone. At the very end you'll have a tiny glint that seems to float off the edge of the blade: almost there! Keep going until even that is gone. I suspect this is similar to the advice I've seen to grind until you raise a burr on the other side, but I found it easier to look for the glint than to feel for the burr. Make sure there's only one light above you, or you'll get multiple glints even with a good bevel, one from each light.

I had been wanting a Lansky sharpening system for quite a while, and I'm glad I bought this one. It came to me packaged very well and included all the items listed in the description. I added a Lansky fine serrated hone to my order which fit into the extra open hone slot perfectly as you'd expect. My only problem with it has been clamping blades into the guide, but once I played around with it a little bit, I got it figured out to where it works well for what I'm doing. I tried it using the instructions at first and it didn't hold the blades very well, but soon I came up with my own method for getting them to stay put. I use it at least once a month to dress the edges on my everyday carried pocket knife, and the blade on my Leatherman Wingman. Will very likely buy another one or two as gifts in the future.
